Getty announces Saturdays Off the 405 concerts schedule

Saturdays Off the 405 is back again next month with a new lively mix of free outdoor performances by up-and-coming bands, along with DJ sets to open and close the night. And starting this spring, there will be free spotlight talks that offer mini-tours of the galleries throughout the evening.

Starting off the new series in May is NYC-based indie rock band Les Savy Fav. Their music style is influenced by art rock and post-punk sounds. Along with frontman Tim Harrington, who is famous for his stage presence and vivid antics, the group has been perfecting their idiosyncratic sound for ten years and counting. With a concoction of dissonant pop defined by driving bass, disco drumming, bratty guitars, and spastic vocals, the band is sure to please with one of its much-storied performances.

Rounding out the evening, KCRW DJ Mario Cotto spins a kaleidoscopic mix inspired by strong coffee, Marcel Duchamp's ready-mades, the NuYorican Poets Café, Blade Runner, Repo Records, metropolitan railways and golden-age hip hop.

In June, Mayer Hawthorne and the Country brings their new school soul sounds to the Getty. Hawthorne’s self-taught, multi-instrument skills mingle with hip-hop drum loops, brilliant harmonies, and heartfelt nostalgia. He draws his music inspirations from Smokey Robinson, Curtis Mayfield, and the legendary songwriting and production trio of Lamont Dozier, Brian Holland, and Eddie Holland Jr.

The series continues in July with indie-folk rock band Dawes. Keeping with their Southern California roots, the band’s music has a vintage Laurel Canyon style, which is described as full of sweet, twangy melodies, dusty singalong, and ripping lead guitar. Fusing intimate introspection with bursting optimism, the band has won fans on the road with standout lyrics and evocative indie-folk harmonies.

Another performance in July by Bomba Estéreo keeps the series going with an explosive dance fusion of hip-hop and dub. Originally from Bogota, Columbia, their music combines traditional Columbian cumbia and electronic sounds. Their Afro Colombian cumbia and champeta rhythms are deftly layered under surf guitar, keyboards, and bass beats, while singer Liliana Saumet's fierce dance hall vocals lend fire to the fresh coastal sounds.

A performance by Brooklyn-based indie rock band The Antlers keeps the series going in August. With a "skyscraping blend of the ambient and the anthemic," the Antlers make music that is at once simple and immense— dream pop with an epic storyline. The critically acclaimed trio crafts its delicately powerful melodies with a fervent, artful earnestness that captivates listeners with lyrical surges, sweeping strings, and starry, sonic layers of postrock.

Admission is free, and so is parking after 5pm. The Museum remains open until 9pm, creating an opportunity to enjoy art, music, a no-host bar, and one of the most spectacular views in Los Angeles as the sun sets.

Other performances will be announced soon.
