Angel City Arts announces jazz fest and young artist competition

Angel City Arts is pleased to announce the dates for the 2011 Angel City Jazz Festival (www.angelcityjazz.com). This year the acclaimed festival will present six major events taking place September 23 through October 2. Venues for the festival events will include the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA), REDCAT at Disney Hall, The Luckman Fine Arts Complex, and the annual day-long signature event at the John Anson Ford Amphitheatre on October 1.

The theme for the 2011 festival is Global Jam – Creative Music from Around the World, and will feature top artists from across the globe including The Tigran Hamasyan Quintet, Rudresh Mahanthappa and his new band Samdhi, Roscoe Mitchell, Theo Bleckman, Edmar Castaneda, the Pan African People’s Arkestra, and more. The full line up with artists and venues will be announced June 1.

Angel City Arts also announces the first annual Angel City Jazz Festival Young Artist Competition. The competition finalists will perform at noted jazz club The Blue Whale in mid-September and the winner will open the Angel City Jazz Festival performing the very first set of the festival at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art on September 23. A $1000 cash prize will also be awarded to the winner.

Selection emphasis for finalists will be placed on musicianship, composition, arranging skills, improvised solo quality, group interaction, and uniqueness of sound. The six finalists will be announced on August 31. Each selected ensemble will receive a confirmation letter shortly thereafter.

The finalists will perform a 40 minute set, in front of a panel of judges consisting of professional jazz artists and educators, at The Blue Whale on September 14 and 15. These performances will be open to the public.

The winning ensemble will be announced on September 16 and will open the 2011 Angel City Jazz Festival, performing the first set at LACMA on September 23, at 5:30 PM.

This competition is open to all high-school and college-aged student jazz ensembles in the greater Los Angeles Area. In order to qualify for the competition the ensembles must:

be composed of musicians between the ages of 15 and 24 years old

have at least one member currently enrolled in a high school, college, music academy or university in the greater Los Angeles area

consist of between 3 and 10 members

compose, arrange and perform original music which features improvisation

Interested artists must submit a package by July 31, 2011. Required submissions items include:

2 copies of a CDR containing at least three original compositions and improvisational solos, for a maximum length of 20 minutes total

a letter of recommendation from a current music instructor

a completed Submission Form (available at http://www.angelcityarts.org)

a self-addressed envelope
