8MM to release fifth studio album

“We refuse to believe that, in order to make the music that continues to earn a place in your heart, we must dip ourselves in sugar and plastic of a color that a corporate image consultant chooses,” lead vocalist Juliette Beavan states in 8MM's opening salvo on their Kickstarter page.

"Our music is about grit and glamour" echos Grammy-nominated producer/mixer and multi-instrumentalist Sean Beavan (Nine Inch Nails, Marilyn Manson, No Doubt). With this in mind, you can call their fifth studio album Between The Devil and Two Black Hearts (release date: September 15, 2012 via ChelseaGirl Records) the “Anti-Nicki Minaj”… Each note of this pristinely produced collection of heartland-tinged electro songs palpitates from an organic heart, not a plastic one. “I guess the theme that runs through this album is Love at a fevered pitch,” adds Juliette. “Twisted, broken, lost or blossoming, it’s always love. "Think PJ Harvey and Led Zeppelin go the desert and end up at a rave in a David Lynch movie,” adds Sean.

Recorded in their bedroom in Laurel Canyon, CA and mixed at The Blue Room, which is essentially located in their backyard, Between The Devil and Two Black Hearts could not have been more natural.

“We have a piano in our bedroom and it pleases me to no end that I can get up in the middle of the night and play a melody that is in my head and Juliette will get up with a pen in hand and tell me what she sees. This is why we are perfect,” laughs Sean.

It’s the couples natural dynamic that pulsates through the album. From the porch-pounding acoustic folk jam of the title track, to the searing metallic crunch of “The One”, to the sultry shuffle dancebeat of “You Brought The Fire”, to the dark sensual electro swing of “Around the Sun”, to the lonesome slide guitar ballad “Everybody Says”, the album traipses from genre to genre without losing cohesion or the beat.

“We came up with the title Between The Devil and Two Black Hearts because the new record really delves into western desert blues and tells the tale with the kind of swing and swagger that only a slide guitar cranked up to ten can convey,” says Sean. “The sound and fury of the lyrics and music made us feel as if we went to the crossroads and buried a wish box. Sometimes wishes come true.”

Launching a Kickstarter campaign nearly three weeks ago to fund the manufacturing, marketing, and tour expenses associated with a traditional release, the band has raised over $17k from fans and fellow musicians and actors as well.

“Eight years and 80 percent of our catalog licensed to film and television and record labels still don’t know what to do with 8MM,” laughs Juliette.

“It’s OK, we understand, because we’re just not going to write a Nicki Minaj song nor do we really want to." Adds Sean, "Nothing against it. It’s just not what we do. We also know that there are a lot of music lovers out there who don’t want to be force fed only three kinds of music.”

Among the famous backers/music lovers who want to see 8MM keep releasing music are Marilyn Manson, legendary author/activist Margaret Atwood, actress/singer Jill Hennessy (Law & Order, Crossing Jordan), producer/guitarist Danny Lohner (NIN, Hollywood Undead), actor Eddie McClintock (Warehouse 13), Adam Pascal (RENT, School of Rock), actress Victoria Pratt (Xena: Warrior Princess, Day Break), Kate Moennig (The L Word, Young Americans), singer/musican Holly Miranda, musician Matt McJunkins (Puscifer, A Perfect Circle), and drummer Elias Malin (Ke$ha). Championed by some of the industry’s leading tastemakers, such as Nic Harcourt of KCRW, and been named in the past as one of the Bands You Need To Know in Alternative Press and a “Buzz Band” by the Los Angeles Times, 8MM’s music has been featured on Grey’s Anatomy, One Tree Hill, Shark and the Mr. And Mrs. Smith soundtrack, amongst many others. Sean’s credits as a much-sought out producer/mixer include Nine Inch Nails, Marilyn Manson, No Doubt, Slayer, Thrice and Depeche Mode. Juliette Beavan has been has been tapped as a celebrity model for the popular red-carpet line, Stop Staring!, joining other celebrity A-listers, such as Nicole Kidman, Eva Mendes, Trisha Yearwoood, Christina Aguilera and Meg White (White Stripes).

8MM is Juliette Beavan (vocals) and Sean Beavan (guitar, bass, keys, percussion, drums). Jon Nicholson played drums on all songs except “Between The Devil and Two Black Hearts” and “Everybody Says”, which were played by Sean. Dave Philips (Frank Black and The Catholics, Perfect) played pedal steel on “Everybody Says”. Their fifth studio album Between The Devil and Two Black Hearts drops on September 15, 2012.
