The Birthday Massacre to release new album

"We wanted Hide And Seek to have a certain depth and atmosphere, so we took time to create a lot of new sound textures that would complement the themes running throughout it," explains Rainbow (guitars/programming/vocals) of Canadian synthrock band THE BIRTHDAY MASSACRE about their new album (Metropolis Records; release date October 9, 2012). "In turn, the lyrics are decidedly darker and more meditative than much of our past work which gives this album a lot of emotional weight and a very distinct tone." A very apt description for their fifth album, Hide and Seek finds the band in darker territory, ripping scabs off of fresh wounds with their trademark slash and burn guitars and synths. The band have announced a North American tour with support from William Control and Aesthetic Perfection. (dates below).

"We always want to be growing and moving forward," adds vocalist Chibi. "We have a formula for working together, writing and recording, that works – but as we grow and change as people, so will what we create. This record, as always, reflects who and where we are at this moment in our lives and with each other."

Once again mixed by Rainbow and Dave Ogilvie (Skinny Puppy, Nine Inch Nails, Killing Joke, Marilyn Manson) who worked on their last two albums Walking With Strangers and Pins and Needles, Hide and Seek explores deeper their very unique niche they've created, searching out the darkest regions and finding awe-inspiring tracks hiding in the crevices. From the opening epic salvo of the soaring "Leaving Tonight" to the insidious midnight rhythms of "Play With Fire", to the virally-infectious darkwave of "Calling" to the twinkling ballad "Cover My Eyes", the album propels The Birthday Massacre forward musically, injecting fresh blood into their system.

"We've been making music for a while now, and I think time has played a large role in the evolution of our sound," says guitarist M. Falcore. "Everything changes over time and we're no exception. Our tastes have changed a little bit over the years and that shows in the music we make, but these changes are subtle. We have a sensibility that will always be recognized as Birthday Massacre."


"There is an intensity to this record that I definitely felt while we were writing and recording," explains Chibi. "At times, for me, it was a struggle. I had some very strong emotions during the time we worked on this, and it shows, I think, in my vocals – and I really love how it turned out. The lyrics also touch on some darker themes. There’s a lot of very moving stuff on this record. Very intense stuff." Adds Rainbow, "There was an underlying sense of tension and urgency throughout the writing process. It was a tumultuous and emotional experience for us but, I think it's yielded some of our best work."

One of the band's hallmarks is their fascinating live shows - a mixture of metal meets synthrock, sifted through a Tim Burton-blender with the audience as involved in the overall look and feel of the shows as the band. "I think it’s because we have fun when we’re playing," Chibi says of their connection with their fans. "For me, it’s not just about playing the songs – it’s about interacting, connecting with the crowd, joking around. I think people pick up on the fact that we genuinely appreciate that they came. I don’t care if my makeup smudges or my shoelace comes untied and I trip and look stupid. Everyone in the venue is hot and sweaty, and we’re all in it together, right?"
