Shinjo Ito (1906-1989), founder of the Shinnyo-en order of Buddhism, was one of Japan's most versatile Buddhist sculptors and an accomplished artist in fields as diverse as calligraphy and photography. Founded in Japan in the 1930s, Shinnyo-en is a global community with almost one million practitioners practicing in almost 100 centers in 19 countries including the United States.
