Christian music artists, September Rain, have recently released a new CD entitled, "One Step At A Time". It is the second release by the group following last year's popular "Joy" that featured traditional and contemporary Christmas tunes during the holiday season.
What is different about "One Step", however, is that the group's organizer and lead vocalist, Lori Jo Gardner, wrote most of the songs for this project. After many years as a musician and performer of others' creations, Lori Jo, was inspired to try her hand at writing.
"My Uncle Larry kept encouraging me to just get started and keep writing words down without limitations or real structure", she recalled. She recounted how his love of poetry and his experiences with writing it were major contributors to her literally taking it one step at a time.
What resulted was a unique blend of style, sound and content that promises to appeal to listeners of various genres. From the 60's pop feel of "You Will Take Me" through a totally cool reggae number entitled "Everywhere That I Go", the release includes thoughtful and reflective ballads co-mingled with the rambunctious rock n' roll of the title track and "Every Day" featuring lead guitarist and Whitefield native, Lee Baker.
Gardner credits Baker and the rest of the ensemble for several of the arrangements.
"I would bring new music and lyrics to practice sessions and let them all hear it", she remembers, "and then each one, with their special talents, would add a little here and a little there till we had something everybody liked".
From there, the possibility of recording all of their hard work became a reality in July of this year. For some members of the band, it was their first time in a live recording studio. Gardner hopes to submit a few of her songs to the A&R departments of some established publishers in the very near future.
The CD features Gardner and her daughter, Cassady, as lead vocalists together with long time friend and solo recording artist, Lori Coronato from Littleton. Although the trio sang together for over seven years, September Rain has only been together since late 2007. They have wasted no time gaining notice as a talented and committed group of artists.
"Our primary objective is to glorify the Lord with our music", Gardner added.
She indicated they have enjoyed a year and a half of traveling and performing live concerts throughout the Northeast. Other members of the band include Scott Ryder (bass guitar, vocals) and Kemp Schanlaber (drums) of Lancaster. Recently they have added vocalist Alyson Ryder from Lancaster and percussionist Bill Gendreau from Littleton.
"One Step At A Time" was recorded at The Outlook studios in Bethel, Maine under the careful direction and masterful engineering of Conni and Ted St. Pierre.
