Sweet announces new tour and CD in the works

Popular rock band Sweet led by bassist/vocalist Steve Priest will begin their “Are You Ready Steve?” 2009 tour and will continue recording their first new CD in decades, it was announced today. The original Sweet was formed by Priest along with vocalist Brian Connolly, drummer Mick Tucker and guitarist Frank Torpey (later replaced by Andy Scott) in the UK and rose to fame with such hits as Ballroom Blitz, Fox on the Run, Love is Like Oxygen, Little Willy, Hellraiser, Teenage Rampage, Blockbuster, Action and many others. The 2009 Sweet tour will be a tribute to Connolly and Tucker whose tragic deaths were terribly pre-mature.

Sweet will be presenters at the 20th Annual Pollstar Concert Industry Awards emanating from Los Angeles’ Club Nokia from 8 – 10 p.m. on Friday, January 30th.

According to Edna Gundersen’s recent story on the cover of the Life section in USA Today:
“A blitz may be coming to your local ballroom. Bassist Steve Priest, a founding member of Sweet, has reconstituted the glittery fuzz-rock band that ignited U.K. and U.S. charts with such ‘70s hits as Ballroom Blitz, Little Willy, Fox on the Run and Love Is Like Oxygen. The Are you Ready Steve? Tour kicks off June 12 at The Whisky in Hollywood, with guitarist Stuart Smith, singer Joe Retta, drummer Richie Onori and keyboardist Stevie Stewart…Priest’s reconfiguration plans to revisit all the historic Sweet spots, including Blockbuster, Action, Hellraiser and Teenage Rampage.”

In additional to drawing big crowds at shows during their 2008 tour, a new generation of fans of all ages are learning about Sweet’s music through various outlets. “So Your Think You Can Dance?” used Ballroom Blitz in its promos and “Life on Mars” used Little Willy in their season premiere. Sweet songs have been featured in numerous movies including: Mike Meyer’s “Wayne’s World” (Blitz), “Dazed and Confused” (Fox on the Run), Adrian Grenier’s “Drive Me Crazy” (Little Willy), Joan Collins’ “The Stud” (Love Is Like Oxygen), “Curse Of the Crimson Altar (Fox) and “Hot Fuzz” (Blitz). Mitsubishi recently used Blitz for a car commercial and the many players of the mass appeal video game franchises “Guitar Hero” and “Rock Band” are becoming Sweet fans due their classic songs being featured in these games.
