'80s concert coming to San Manuel June 10

Thursday, June 10, 2010, San Manuel Indian Bingo & Casino flashes back to the 80’s with music that moved the decade. The evening of gnarly music includes Atlantic Starr, DeBarge, The S.O.S. Band, and the Mary Jane Girls. Tickets are available at Ticketmaster.com and the San Manuel Box Office for $25, $35, and $45.

Atlantic Starr
Atlantic Starr was among the top urban contemporary acts of the 80’s, but their roots were 70’s soul and funk. In 1976, the Lewis brothers, David, Wayne and Jonathan formed the group, which grew to a nine-person lineup, including a bassist, saxophonist, flutist, singer, trumpeter, and drummer. The group’s debut self-titled album contained the funk hit "Stand Up," which made it to number 16 on Billboards R&B singles chart. The smash hit "Always", soared to number one on both the pop and R&B charts, propelling the group to stardom.

DeBarge
Formed in 1978, the DeBarge quintet was comprised of four brothers and a sister. Led by soft-and-sweet vocals of brother Eldra, DeBarge signed with Motown and issued a debut album in 1981, "The DeBarges". Their second album, "All This Love", came with success and would be the groups’ first gold-certified album. Their 1983 "In a Special Way" album was another gold-certified success, and landed them a sold-out U.S. tour. The group would go on to produce best-of compilation albums, including the latest in 2000, "20th Masters: The Millennium Collection".

Mary Jane Girls
The Mary Jane Girls were created as a product of Rick James funskter imagination. In the early 80’s they were signed to Motown and consisted of four girls that portrayed various characters James had developed. The groups self-titled debut album in 1983 boasted hits like "Candy Man" and "All Night Long." The second album, "Only Four You", came with more acclaimed hits, like "In My House" a number three R&B and "Wild and Crazy Love" at number ten. The girls never recorded a third album, and eventually broke up in 1987.

The S.O.S. Band
Started in 1977, The S.O.S. Band, originally named Santa Monica, was comprised of seven musicians. It produced a two-million-selling single their first time out. "Take You Time (Do It Right)" went platinum, pearking at number one R&B for five weeks and at number three pop on Billboard’s charts in spring 1980. The group’s debut self-titled album went gold, selling over 800,000 copies and holding the number two R&B spot for three weeks. Their third album, "S.O.S. Band III" went to number 27 R&B in 1982 and produced the hit single, "High Hopes," which hit number 25 R&B.
