Launched in February by Richard Schave and Kim Cooper--the founding Director and Curator of the Downtown Art Walk non-profit--the creative consortium LAVA (The Los Angeles Visionaries Association) is fast establishing itself as one of the city's most intriguing arts collectives, with a calendar packed with compelling, offbeat urban events and a growing list of notable Visionary contributors.

LAVA Visionaries swept this week's L.A. Weekly Best Of awards, so it's no surprise that they're pulling out all the stops for Halloween, with a pair of incredible, affordable events sure to delight and inspire anybody looking for a memorable cultural outing. The spooky Halloween LAVA events play out in this order...

1) LAVA's monthly Sunday Salon, Sunday 10/31, 12pm-2pm, Free, Clifton's Cafeteria, Downtown. Info http://lavatransforms.org/salon1010

On the last Sunday of each month, LAVA welcomes interested individuals to gather on the third floor of the historic Clifton's Cafeteria for a loosely structured conversational Salon featuring short presentations and opportunities to meet and connect with one another. Visionary presenters at the Halloween-themed October Salon include:

JOE OESTERLE, author of the just-released "Weird Hollywood" and the classic "Weird California." The multi-talented Joe is a former Senior Editor of National Lampoon, a visual artist, musician and curator of the strange and marvelous. At the Sunday Salon, he'll be sharing some stories that were too peculiar to include in "Weird Hollywood," reflecting on the nature of eccentricity as a way of life, and signing copies of his new book.

And GHOULA (Ghost Hunters of Urban LA) members RICHARD CARRADINE presents two of the group's recent publications "Disneyland After Dark: A Haunted Guide to the Happiest Place on Earth" and "GHOULA Comix #1." Comic artists will be on hand to sign their work.

GHOULA also presents SEE YOU IN 100 YEARS, the group's first science project. This collaboration with filmmaker ANTHONY DEPTULA is inspired by famed magician HARRY HOUDINI's experiments in communication beyond the grave. Salon guests can participate in an attempt to recreate the Houdini Experiment using an Internet Time Capsule.

ABOUT THE EXPERIMENT: Is there an after life? Harry Houdini had the same question. Heeven had a secret pass code with his beloved wife. A message sent from beyond to say "I'm here." In the spirit of Houdini, GHOULA pays homage to this experiment in a grand scale by creating a modern time capsule, digitally recording participants' secret pass codes, and then archiving the time capsule for a century. Detailed instructions will be left in the hands of a respected institution, and in the year 2110 a non-affiliated caretaker will be select a team of mediums, psychics, and scientists to reach out to the time capsule's deceased participants.

2) GHOULA and Visionary NICK MATONAK present The Great Million Dollar Ghost Hunt, Sunday 10/31, 2:30 pm-5 pm, Million Dollar Theatre, 307 South Broadway, Downtown. $5, reservations required. Info/reserve http://lavatransforms.org/million

Calling all ghost hunters, paranormal investigators, psychics, sensitives, and those interested in getting a glimpse of the "other side." Whether you are a seasoned pro or this is your first ghost hunt, GHOULA and theater historian NICK MATONAK want you! If you are up for the challenge, come be a part of the biggest "ecto-experiment" ever attempted in Los Angeles (andpossibly the world). On Halloween (Oct. 31st) @ 2:30pm, the doors to the historic, haunted Million Dollar Theater will open, and everyone will have exactly two and a half hours to document anything "out of the ordinary."

From electro-magnetic anomalies to shivers down your spine, if you feel it, witness it, or record it, we want to hear about it, and we want to know exactly where it happened. So bring your EMF meters, your EVP recorders, your cameras, or just yourself. Each participant will receive their own map, which will be used to record the location of any "activity." Please keep your info confidential until after the experiment, to discourage copy-cat contamination. The maps will then be returned at the end of the event to GHOULA, at which point the group will give a presentation on previously reported unexplained experiences in the theater. Based on everyone's data,"hot spots" will be determined and posted online with the actual stories associated with this location's ghost(s). Those that have devices that need time to be reviewed (i.e. digital recorders, infra-red video, etc.) will have one week (til Nov. 7) to report any additional "places of interest" to be included before our big reveal at GHOULA's monthly "Spirits with Spirits "mixer. The results will be posted the next day @ http://www.ghoula.org.

For this once in a lifetime opportunity to explore this haunted landmark with others from the paranormal community, a $5.00 donation is requested that will go to help preserve these amazing buildings for future generations to enjoy. This event will also be limited to the first 100 people interested, and the online guest list will be closed at 11am on Sunday, October 31.

Interested Angelenos are encouraged to come out and be part of one or both of these LAVA events celebrating the city and encouraging connections.
