This Halloween, for one night only, critically acclaimed author Mark Z. Danielewski returns to REDCAT with a theatrical presentation of his limited edition, illustrated ghost story The Fifty Year Sword. Building upon the momentum of last year's sold-out shows, this year's performance will include 40-foot shadows by shadowcaster Christine Marie, sound design by John Zalewski, live music, and more— all conducted by the author himself.
Danielewski, who is best known for his bestselling novels House of Leaves and Only Revolutions, said of The Fifty Year Sword, "It's a ghost story for adults who still remember what it's like to wonder and fear like a child— to find confusion in the obvious, delight in strangeness and reason in the unseen."
The Fifty Year Sword tells the tale of a recently divorced seamstress who encounters a shadowy Story Teller who recounts for five orphans a story of revenge, a harrowing quest, and a terrible sword. Soon the sword itself is revealed, drawn from a long black box, and a fateful dare is made before the clock strikes midnight in this chronicle of malice foretold and retold.
With a style described by The Guardian as "...a meditation on the way we read," Danielewski utilizes his trademark bold and unconventional page layouts in The Fifty Year Sword with five voices each marked by different-colored quotation marks. Last year, the Los Angeles Times' Jacket Copy remarked, "The story jumped quickly from one reader to another... the various voices braided together with a burbling momentum."
A limited number of rare second edition copies of The Fifty Year Sword will be available for purchase at the event. Book sale proceeds will benefit the Los Angeles chapter of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF), which will also have a booth at the event. Danielewski chose the JDRF in honor of Nate, the 11-year old son of the couple who inspired the author's first book House of Leaves, who has been living with Type 1 Diabetes since age two when he was diagnosed on October 31, 2002.
Prior to the show, Danielewski will give away three copies of The Fifty Year Sword via his Facebook and Twitter pages. Cast information and on-site giveaways will be announced in the coming days.
