Pasadena tree lighting ceremony Dec. 8

Pasadena Mayor Bill Bogaard will lead the city’s official Christmas tree-lighting ceremony and holiday celebration Thursday, Dec. 8, from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. in the grand entrance at Pasadena City Hall, 100 N. Garfield Ave.

Wearing Santa hats, a children’s chorus from the citywide after-school recreation program will perform music of the season. Refreshments will be served.

Bogaard will flip the switch that turns on the lights of the 20-foot Washington Noble Fir tree. The colorful lights, donated by Pasadena Water and Power, are energy-saving, light-emitting diodes (LED) that use about 90 percent less energy than incandescent tree lights and produce almost no heat. The tree will also be decorated with large, colorful ornaments.

Everyone is encouraged to bring new, unwrapped toys, sporting equipment or gift cards to place in the Spark of Love Toy Drive box. At the end of the ceremony, guests and firefighters will load the gifts into a waiting Pasadena Fire Department ambulance, which will transport the gifts so they can be wrapped and then opened on Christmas morning by needy children and teens.
