Anoushka Shankar releases album and tours

Internationally acclaimed and Grammy-nominated sitarist, composer, and conductor Anoushka Shankar shines on her Deutsche Grammophon debut Traveller. The daughter and disciple of maestro Ravi Shankar has been hailed as “a new breed of super-musician” by the Japan Times and BBC Music Magazine noted she was a “creative force” and a “star performer”. To coincide with the album release (March 20th), Shankar will embark on a multiple-city tour across the U.S. (See dates below).

With her deep-rooted understanding of Indian classical form and the rich heritage of her father’s innovative genius, Anoushka is constantly pushing boundaries on every level. Produced by visionary Spanish songwriter, guitarist and producer Javier Limón, Traveller fuses ancient Gypsy flamenco with classical Indian music resulting in an “inspired” (The Guardian) collection steeped in tradition while maintaining a modern sound. Shankar collaborated with many world-renowned Indian and flamenco musicians on this beautiful, ground-breaking musical journey including pianist Pedro Ricardo Miño on “Bulería Con Ricardo”, guitarist Pepe Habichuela on “Boy Meets Girl” and Concha Buika and Sandra Carrasco on vocals for the mesmerizing “Casi uno” and “Kanya” respectively. Other highlights include “Dancing In Madness“which showcases the actual flamenco dancer Farruco’s feet furiously tapping in tune with percussion and the fast-paced title track “Traveller”.

Anoushka Shankar’s back story is equally as intriguing as her music. Born in London, where she now resides with her husband, director Joe Wright and their son Zubin, Shankar spent most of her childhood shuttling back and forth between India and California. She has been playing and studying the sitar since she was nine and at age thirteen she made her performing debut in New Delhi. Her first solo recording, Anoushka (1998), was released to critical acclaim as were Anourag (2000) and Live at Carnegie Hall (2001) — the latter bringing her a Grammy nomination in the category “Best World Music Album” (the youngest artist and first woman ever to receive that distinction). Having firmly established herself in Indian classical music, Anoushka began experimenting with a fertile crossover mix of Indian and Western musical styles, first on her Grammy-nominated, self-composed and produced album Rise and again on the collaborative project Breathing Under Water. Shankar made her public conducting debut in New Delhi premiering her father’s composition Kalyan — and served as conductor with him and George Harrison on the 1997 recording Chants of India. In November 2002, she took part in the historic memorial concert for Harrison at the Royal Albert Hall. Other diverse musical legends that Anoushka has collaborated with include Sting, Herbie Hancock, Rodrigo y Gabriela, Philip Glass, Joshua Bell, Nitin Sawhney, Thievery Corporation and Jethro Tull among others.
