The Space Ducks: Soundtrack, Daniel Johnston’s first studio album in 3 years, was born out of a lifelong dream – to make a comic book. Daniel’s vision came to fruition and his first ever comic book, Space Ducks: An Infinite Comic Book of Musical Greatness, was unveiled at Austin’s SXSW in March. The comic book was enhanced by a free interactive iPad app which also included a sneak peek of some of the songs from the Space Ducks: Soundtrack.
Space Ducks: Soundtrack, Daniel’s 18th studio album, comes out digitally today, April 17, 2012. It is a two part recording comprised of 7 new Daniel-penned songs including the title track “Space Ducks Theme Song,” “Mask” and tongue-in-cheek “Mean Girls Give Pleasure” plus 5 new Space Ducks inspired songs written by Deer Tick, Unknown Mortal Orchestra, Eleanor Friedberger, Fruit Bats and Lavender Diamond. The album was produced by Adrian Quesada (of Grammy winning group Grupo Fantasma). A vinyl and CD version with bonus tracks will be released this Summer.
Daniel Johnston has spent the last 20 or so years exposing his heartrending tales of unrequited love, cosmic mishaps, and existential torment to an ever-growing international cult audience. Initiates, including a healthy number of discerning musicians and critics, have hailed him as an American original in the style of bluesman Robert Johnson and country legend Hank Williams. A number of artists -- among them the Dead Milkmen, Yo La Tengo, the Velvet Underground's songs. And he as collaborated with the likes of Jad Fair (a founding member of Half Japanese, who've also done Daniel's songs), the Butthole Surfers, Bongwater/Shimmydisc guru Kramer, and members of Sonic Youth. Daniel gained his widest public exposure to date when, at the 1992 MTV Music Awards, Nirvana leader Kurt Cobain (who constantly touted Daniel in interviews) wore a Johnston T-shirt.
