iTunes releases Top 100 downloads chart

For the first time ever iTunes has released a chart of the Top 100 downloaded tracks and albums for the year - Daniel Powter and The Fray topped the lists, respectively, for 2006.
With over 1.5 billion songs downloaded, and more than 3.5 million tracks available, iTunes is the most popular music jukebox and online music store in the world and the iTunes Store Best of 2006 charts provide a strong indicator of trends for legal music downloads in the US and around the world.
Since The Fray's single "Over My Head" debuted sales for the band have climbed steadily driving "How To Save A Life" to its position as the most downloaded album of the year and pushing sales of "Over My Head" consistently up, to land the single at #7 on the iTunes Top 100 Tracks chart.
Daniel Powter's "Bad Day" was the top track of the year, Nelly Furtado's "Promiscuous" landed at # 2 and sales of James Blunt's "You're Beautful" were strong enough to secure the #3 download of the year. The album and the single were two of the strongest sellers on iTunes in 2006, with "Back to Bedlam" becoming iTunes fourth biggest album of the year.
The Dixie Chicks, the Red Hot Chili Peppers, John Mayer and Justin Timberlake all had strong first sales weeks on iTunes when their albums were released, driven by digital pre-order campaigns.
