THIS WEEK! October 30, 2008
AFRO FUNKENSTEIN!
special guest deejay:
DJ VIKTER DUPLAIX (KISS N' GRIND / BBE)
Vikter, a Philadelphia native, began his career early studying music and singing in touring choirs with legendary artists such as Teddy Pendergrass and Luciano Pavarotti. His DJ skills were honed with Philly legends Jazzy Jeff and King Britt and was mentored in the fine art of business by none other than Philadelphia International's own Kenny Gamble. Vikter is a founding member of Philly's Axis Music Group, a music production house shared with Grammy award winner James Poyser and executive Chauncey Childs. His introduction to the global music scene came in 2000 with his installment of K7!'s DJ Kicks series, which showcased his vocal stylings and musical taste.
In 2002, Vikter released his first full-length artist project titled "International Affairs" on Hollywood Records. The CD garnered critical acclaim. His production work continues to defy genre as he creates soundscapes for artists as diverse as Earth, Wind and Fire, Jazzanova, Norman Brown, Nitin Sawhney, King Britt, Bob James, N'dea Davevenport (Brand New Heavies), Ladybug Mecca (Digable Planets), and Spacek. He is even reworking Radiohead's "Tree Fingers" from their massively acclaimed LP "Amnesiac" for the BBE Records tribute to the London-based phenoms.

BLACK UHURU
"LIVE IN LONDON" DVD SCREENING (9pm Sharp!)
Black Uhuru is one of the top groups to rise out of Jamaica’s culturally-rich reggae scene. The word Uhuru, meaning “freedom” in Swahili, has certainly been a theme in the timeless music Black Uhuru has produced.
Black Uhuru started in 1968 when three young men, Euvin “Don Carlos” Spencer, Rudolph “Garth” Dennis and Derrick “Duckie” Simpson, all from a tough neighborhood called Waterhouse, decided to record music. However, the group did not last long as Don left to pursue a solo career while Garth joined another group. “Duckie” Simpson held on to the dream and soon found an up and coming singer named Mykal Rose. They along with Errol Nelson, a singer from another group, recorded the group’s first studio album “Black Sounds of Freedom” with renowned reggae producer King Jammy.
In the late 70’s Duckie added American singer Sandra “Puma” Jones to join Black Uhuru. With the death of reggae king Bob Marley in the 80s, it was assumed by many that reggae music and its popularity had passed with him. That impression was short lived when Black Uhuru released the album “Red”. The triple platinum album was named the “24th Best Album” of the decade by Rolling Stone magazine.
