When eclectic bus adventure company Esotouric took over the free downtown LA Downtown Art Walk shuttle earlier this year, it was operating out of a city DASH bus and nobody wanted to ride. But throw a vintage painted custom school bus into the mix, book magicians, singers, freak show performers, mimes, poets and even entire marching bands, and the Hippodrome bus quickly became a downtown destination, often standing room only.
In November, Esotouric, partnering with Brookfield Properties, the owner of 7+FIG at Ernst & Young Plaza, adds a second extraordinary free shuttle bus to their repertoire, and like the Hippodrome it too is named after a legendary lost downtown theater that's now a vacant lot. The original Hazard's Pavilion, built in 1887 at Fifth and Olive Streets, was a huge hall that hosted boxing matches and religious revivals, and gave way to the original L.A. Philharmonic in 1906. It's now slated to become the luxurious Park Fifth.
Hazard's Pavilion (the bus) will bring folks from the office towers and hotels of western downtown to where the action is along Spring and Main Streets during the monthly Downtown Art Walk. Starting at Seventh and Figueroa, the looping route includes the 7+FIG Art Space, the shops and restaurants of 7+FIG at Ernst and Young Plaza, FIDM art gallery, Ralph's Fresh Faire market (where passengers will be personally greeted by wine steward Mike Berger), restaurant row on Seventh Street, and popular Italian trattoria Colori Kitchen before connecting with the Main and Spring Gallery Row at two spots. Entertainment will be offered both on and off the bus, with two special performing "living bus stops" providing route information and dazzling amusement at select intersections.
Sponsored by Brookfield Properties and hosted by Kim Cooper of Esotouric, Hazard's Pavilion is a customized luxury coach class bus, with plush curving brown leather seats, big screen television monitors showing historic L.A. films and photos, and a fascinating slate of artists, including many Vaudeville-inspired performers who'll make the most of the intimate setting with traditional American entertainments given an unexpected contemporary twist. Climb aboard Hazard's Pavilion for a luxurious and amusing transition between downtown's corridors of commerce and its wildest creative scene, every second Thursday during Art Walk.
7+FIG Art Space, a new venue for visual and performing arts in downtown Los Angeles, is an initiative of Brookfield Properties and is part of its national arts program which presents, produces and commissions works of art for the public spaces of its commercial properties.
