John Doe + Kathleen Edwards - Hurtin’and Flurtin’ Co-headlining tour in November
We’re giddy about the upcoming tour with John Doe & Kathleen not only are they incredible on their own, but we had a little hand in this whole pairing ...check out what John Doe had to say (below)...then go buy your tickets to a show near you and show your love!
“ When Shilah & Polly Parsons asked me to participate in the MAP/Gram Parsons benefit which included Keith Richards, Norah Jones Lucinda Williams, Dwight Yoakam etc, I thought that they had gotten the wrong John Doe. Of course I was aware of all the efforts by Shilah & Sin City Productions in the LA alt country scene... It seemed that Sin City was at the heart of all manner of things relating to country music in LA, so it wasn't surprising that Shilah & Sin city were involved in a show that would change my life & connect me to someone I've built a strong musical collaboration & lasting friendship. Kathleen & I met for the first time at sound check that day in Santa Barbara & just clicked! For that I will always be grateful to Shilah & that's exactly the kind thing she so good at; bringing the right elements together at the right time & changing things forever in the process.” - John Doe, October 2008

Tim Easton and some talented artists out in Joshua Tree have made video for his latest song “Open Letter To The Founding Fathers” ... It’s timely and therefore it’s our FEATURED VIDEO on our website. www.sincitysocialclub.com Check it out and share it with those you love... Yet another reason why we love Tim Easton with all of our hearts!
And while we’re at it...have you seen the latest video from HAYES CARLL?! I laughed so hard, I cried... It’s for his AMA award winning Song of the Year - “She left me for Jesus” and it stars our homie, JESSE DAYTON! I just heard that over 70,000 folks have downloaded the video – a portion of which are fundamentalists, who have written in telling them they’re going to hell for making the video ...Jesse’s response, “ lighten up Francis...it’s a joke!” I couldn’t agree more!
Here’s the link! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7rb0SN0ouh8
Speaking of JESSE DAYTON ...he’s getting’ all Halloweenie on us. Not only is he in the studio recording songs for the next Rob Zombie flick, but he’s a two steppin’, two timin’, do gooder too!
2nd ANNUAL HONKY TONK HALLOWEEN COSTUME PARTY/DANCE
FRI. OCT. 31ST at ROADHOUSE RAGS in SOUTH AUSTIN 8pm to 12am
I pulled this from www.jessedayton.com
The list of musicians playing live w/ the JD BAND is off the hook. How did we get Rockabilly Queen ROSIE FLORES, Texas Country Soul singer MIKE BARFIELD, Honky-Tonker and XM Outlaw DJ DALLAS WAYNE, Austin Alt-Country God KEVIN RUSSEL (of the Gourds), Roots Rock Legend RICK BROUSSARD (of Two Hoots and a Holler...one of my heros!), Songwriter to the Stars RANDY WEEKS, The New Hillbilly Princess BRENNEN LEIGH, Austin Country Legend JEFF HUGHES (of Chapparal), to all come out and sit in with us for dancers and listeners alike?
Even though it's a FREE SHOW, any donations made at the door will go to benefit HURRICANE IKE victim/club owner WRECKS BELL at the OL' QUARTER on GALVESTON ISLAND. It's a great cause. I just got back from the Gulf Coast folks and it's reeeeally bad down there. So keep your karma straight and make plans to come by, even if it's just for a little while. (I'll be dressed as Pancho Villa so watch out if ya sneak up on me!)...
If you’re in Austin on Halloween you might want to dawn your Dolly Parton Costume and come out for a SINFULLY good time!Who’s afraid of double dippin?!POLLY PARSONS and our favorite Super Delegate, DAVID HOLMES are also hosting a party the over at Hickory Winds (Polly & Charlie’s place) featuring CHARLIE TERRELL And The Murdered Johns...

BACK due to overwhelming demand! NO DEPRESSION WEBSITE HAS RELAUNCHED!
NoDepression.Com - How happy are we that the community has spoken and that Kyla & Peter have worked fearlessly over the last 9 months to bring something back that is so vital to all of us around the world. This is a real “community” project and if you are able, you can personally help keep it alive by becoming a member for as little as $150 - that’s only $12.50/month! Of course access to the website is free ... But contributions certainly do help!
NoDepression.com, a greatly expanded and enhanced website from the former bimonthly magazine No Depression, has made its debut as the primary destination for fans of American roots music in all its various incarnations. Like the magazine, which was the authoritative voice for roots music from 1995 to 2008, NoDepression.com stresses first-rate writing – now bolstered with audio, video, and featuring daily updates of editorial content.
At launch, the site previewed Lucinda Williams' album Little Honey and her North American tour, as well as a report from the Austin City Limits Music Festival, and daily coverage of the Hardly Strictly Bluegrass festival in San Francisco Oct. 3-5.
NoDepression.com is edited by No Depression co-founder Peter Blackstock and will feature contributions from many of the magazine's longtime senior editors and contributing editors. The site was created by The Old State, a web design and development firm in Dallas, Texas. No Depression received significant assistance in creating the new site through contributions from its Founders Circle, a cast of more than 200 donors whose names appear on the Founders Circle page.
Also available is the first No Depression bookazine," part of a new twice-annual series of print publications issued through University of Texas Press. The bookazine, edited by Blackstock and Grant Alden, combines book and magazine elements to carry on No Depression's tradition of publishing long-form music journalism. A series of 15 NoDepression.com Launch Shows will be held October 15-23 in conjunction with MusiCares, a foundation designed to assist musicians in times of financial, personal or medical crisis. Plans are also in the works for a July 2009 No Depression Festival to be held in the Seattle area.
Austin Artist Alert –
Got a secret Santa or holiday tune that you want played at Austin Bergstom airport? They’re looking for music from Austin based (or heavily associated with) to play over the PA system during the holidays. There’s also a couple of slots left this year for solo artist performances in December. If you have a song or two, send me an MP3 and we’ll get it over to the head of programming there for ya!
Interested in performing? Shoot me an email and we’ll put you in touch with the right people!SXSW showcase submission deadline is approaching! The 23rd Annual SXSW Music Festival will take place in Austin March 18th – 22nd 2009. We’re already gearing up for a great Sin City Social Club bash on Friday, March 20th as I have had 15 fantastic artists talk to me about playing! Aye Chihuahua! We may need two days or two stages this year...I’d better get to the drawing board. If you know you’re coming and want to be considered to play at our bash you’d better let me know asap as even at this point we won’t be able to accommodate everyone.
As for submitting for an official SXSW showcase...I pulled this off of SXSW.com Deadlines (October 24, 2008 for international artists, November 7, 2008 for artists in the USA) and fee ($25 for early submissions, $35 for applications submitted after September 26, 2008) are the same. You can apply directly at SXSW.com or thru Sonicbids.com
Big bummer - Miles of Music suspends operations...
Online music retailer Miles of Music, whose physical offices are based in the San Fernando Valley, is now "closed for business," per Jeff Weiss, who co-owns the company with wife Corrie Gregory. Miles of Music was launched around the same time as No Depression, which regularly ran full-page Miles of Music ads during its run. Since that time the affectionately nicknamed "MoM" has been a staunch supporter of independent and Americana/roots artists (and of AmericanaRootsLA). Last week, however, due to the turbulent economy and changes in the music business, Weiss and Gregory decided it was time suspend operations. Existing Miles of Music orders have therefore been cancelled and Paypal orders are being refunded.
