The Gamble House to hold docent training in Feburary

It is no secret what has kept the doors of The Gamble House open for public touring for the last 42 years- the House is dependent upon the art, craft, goodwill, commitment and passion of many docents.

Each year, beginning in February, The Gamble House conducts a training class to prepare prospective docents to become tour guides. We invite men and women interested in The Gamble House, the Arts and Crafts Movement, architecture, decorative arts, and sharing knowledge and history with others, to participate in this special training. The class begins in February and by May newly trained docents are conducting House tours for the public. In September the class resumes with more in-depth learning, and ends in November with a splendid graduation dinner and celebration.

It takes 170 docents and a small dedicated staff to keep the doors open for public tours and other activities, and each year more than twenty new docents join the family. It's a true win-win situation. The House needs docents to meet its mission to bring to the public the art and craft of architects Charles and Henry Greene through tours, lectures and activities; while Docents receive specialized training from craftsmen, artists, Greene family members, architects, experts, and other docents, and then have the satisfaction of sharing their knowledge and interest in their own words. with House visitors.

Gamble House docents make a significant contribution to The House and the community. They are volunteers in a thriving, historically significant structure and are part of a growing community of people dedicated to preserving history and bringing the art and craftsmanship of Charles and Henry Greene to the public.

The first phase of docent training begins on Saturday, February 3, 2007 and continues for ten Saturdays.

For additional information, or to express interest in becoming a Gamble House docent call 626 793-3334 and follow the prompts to Docent Council information. Phone calls will be answered promptly.
