Ragala Music and Dance Theatre coming to Caltech

Ragamala Music and Dance Theatre will perform on Friday, April 3, at 8 p.m. in Caltech’s Beckman Auditorium.

Sva (Vital Force), the evening’s title work, represents sound as the first element in an unfolding universe. Six dancers and three drummers converge on stage to embody the rhythm and flow of life. Wadaiko Ensemble Tokara’s large, sweeping movements, thundering force, and physicality compliment Ragamala’s fluid precision, punctuated footwork, and sustained gestures. Sva features two young masters of their respective forms, Art Lee and Aparna Ramaswamy, and explores the kinships between Taiko and Bharatanatyam, the spiritual traditions from which they emerged, and their journey into the 21st century.

Ragamala presents Bharatanatyam, the ancient classical dance of Southern India and one the world’s oldest and most involved dance forms. Co-artistic directors Ranee Ramaswamy and Aparna Ramaswamy showcase Bharatanatyam’s intricacy and range, from the traditional solo form to the aesthetic vitality of the company’s ensemble.

Tickets to this performance are priced at $26.00, $21.00, and $16.00; youth (high school age and younger): $10.00. Senior rush tickets will go on sale for $10.00, beginning one-half hour before the performance (subject to availability). Tickets can be purchased at the Caltech Ticket Office, 332 S. Michigan Avenue, Pasadena.

Parking for Beckman Auditorium is located at 332 South Michigan Avenue, Pasadena (south of Del Mar Boulevard). For information, call (626) 395-4652 or, outside the Pasadena area, 1 (888) 222-5832.
