COMMENT: According to the current April 2nd Rolling Stone Magazine review of the forthcoming “Action: The Sweet Anthology” CD:

“Was it bubble-gum? Glam? Hard rock? A singles band in an album era, Sweet played pop melodies through the 70s with such joy and malevolence that the English quartet typically confounded critics in the US, where much of their catalog went unreleased: For every glam-tastic American hit like “Ballroom Blitz” there were equally catchy UK protopunk smashes like “Teenage Rampage” that suggested the Who covering the Archies via a phalax of violent guitars, vicious drums and castrato-high harmonies…Sweet were the glitter gang Def Leppard always wanted to be.”

According to a recent USA Today Life section cover story:

“A blitz may be coming to your local ballroom. Bassist Steve Priest has reconstituted the glittery fuzz-rock band that ignited UK and US charts with such ‘70s hits as Ballroom Blitz, Little Willy, Fox on the Run and Love is Like Oxygen. The Are You Ready Steve? Tour…plans to revisit all the historic Sweet spots.”

In addition to drawing big crowds during their tour, a new generation of fans of all ages are enjoying Sweet’s music through various outlets. “So You Think You Can Dance?” and “Life On Mars” used Ballroom Blitz and Little Willy. Sweet songs have been featured in numerous movies including Mike Meyer’s “Wayne’s World,” “Dazed and Confused,” Adrian Grenier’s “Drive Me Crazy”, Joan Collins’ “The Stud,” “Curse Of The Crimson Altar,” “Hot Fuzz” and “My Best Friend’s Girl.” The many players of the mass appeal video game franchises “Guitar Hero” and “Rock Band” are playing along to Sweet’s classic music featured in these games.
