Christina Aguilera visits Haiti

Christina Aguilera went straight to work in her new role as Ambassador Against Hunger of the World Food Programme (WFP), by visiting Haiti earlier this week. Together with her husband Jordan Bratman she toured the quake-stricken country with WFP aid workers and spent time with mothers and children who have found refuge in camps after the January earthquake.

Aguilera visited schools to meet the children receiving food aid through WFP school meal programmes. The world-famous singer on Tuesday helped serve meals of rice and beans to children at the Ecole Lysee Fritz Pierre Louis in Port-au-Prince and at the Ecole Saint Terese de Darbonne, in Leogane, a badly damaged town south of the capital.

"I was so moved by the devastation in Haiti but also by the spirit of its people. I met young mothers who live in tents in camps and who just want to make sure they can feed their children. The only food they get now is from the World Food Programme," said Aguilera. “The children I visited in the schools were so happy to get rice and beans from WFP. They have such joy and are eager to learn despite the destruction around them. The children deserve a chance - and I want to make sure they get a chance. Aguilera met WFP Executive Director Josette Sheeran while in Haiti to discuss the hunger response after the earthquake. WFP's operation in the Caribbean nation is shifting away from emergency relief to programmes such as school meals, nutrition schemes and food-for-work projects to help the national recovery effort.

"Together with Christina we can help to give Haiti the chance for a fresh start after so much misery. We cannot allow the world to forget the hunger that women and children face. Christina is lending her voice to help those who cannot be heard," Sheeran said.

During her time with children of Port-au-Prince, Aguilera sang ‘Happy Birthday, Haiti’ to highlight how reconstruction efforts are giving the long-suffering nation the chance of a new start.
