MORNING PROGRAM 10:30 - NOON: DOSHIMY BACKGROUND AND WORK IN SHIBORI & WEARABLE ART
For thirty years Doshi has designed Costumes for Theatre, Dance, Ice-Skating, Stunt Shows and TV. She has received numerous honors and awards in design including a Themed Entertainment Award for excellence in costume design for Waterworld at Universal Studios Hollywood. Dyeing, discharging color and manipulating fabric surfaces has always been an integral part of her design work. For the last twelve years Doshi has pursued fiber arts independently from Theatre and Costume design. Her work is an exploration of shibori techniques both traditional and modern. Doshis expressive pieces of wearable art and textiles are dynamic and evocative statements of spirit and soul. Her work is exhibited in galleries throughout the United States and Europe, with a recent group exhibition at the Mingei International Museum, San Diego and shows at Atelier Designers in New York. Doshi is also a professor of Costume Design at California State University, Long Beach. She supervises and teaches costume design, patterning, crafts and dyeing.
AFTERNOON PROGRAM 1:00 P.M.: Diane Ricks Students Fashion Show
THIS MONTHS WORKSHOP: MAY 16 (ONLY ONE DAY)
DOSHI - SHIBORI DYEING TECHNIQUES
Shibori is the Japanese word for a variety of ways of embellishing textiles by shaping cloth and securing it before dyeing. The designs created by shibori processes all share a softness of outline and spontaneity of design. This latter is shiboris special magic, made possible by exploiting the beauty of the fortuitous things that happen when dye enters shaped cloth. The class will look at the history of shibori and its growth through photos, books, and samples from Japan, India, South America, Africa, and the U.S. Through instruction and demonstration you will learn the traditional shibori techniques of stitching, knotting and pole wrapping. You will be able to complete several samples of the techniques.
LOCATION: Bobbie Moons House in Altadena.
COST: $120 for members, $130 for non-members
