End o' Week Musings

Yeah, yeah, I'm spoiled... I'll be out of the office until Tuesday again. I work hard, I deserve it and my editor is savvy enough to recognize it.

I kept busy last weekend, beginning with Festivus Friday. I met my mom and stepdad for lunch and a chat. It was good to catch up. Then I went to Pomona to visit Atticus' best friend Indiana Bones. If you recall, Atti is my Jack Russell terrier who passed away in July. Indy is 50 pounds or more larger that my perky too-smart pup and has a heart just as big.

Indy enjoyed the treats I brought him and whined when it was time for me to leave. I didn't just visit Indy, though, I also took some peanuts for Boccio the cockatoo and a lot of good stories, plus a gift for their dad, John.

Saturday I met http://www.dabelly.com/ movie critic Vernor for a showing of "The Muppets." It was funny because as we were walking out, Vernor teased that he was sorry I didn't like the film and the girl working at the theater heard us. She seemed genuinely concerned when she asked me what was wrong with the movie. We laughed, as I loved it. I'm a huge Muppets fan and I thought it was worth every penny of the ticket price.

In the evening, Byron joined me for my Ad Hoc Consort party. We were supposed to jam, but not enough musicians showed up, so we talked and ate and then watched a Laurel and Hardy film with Bob playing his pipe organ for the soundtrack. It was pretty amazing. But the best part for me was Bob's theater-style popcorn with melted butter and salt, just like the movies-- yum!

Christmas was quiet. I worked on my sewing and goofed around on my computer while cooking Holiday Turkey in my crockpot. I sided my melt-in-your-mouth turkey (the recipe includes cranberry sauce and onion soup mix) with garlic cheesy mashed potatoes and brown sugared carrots and brussel sprouts. It was probably too many calories, but a little feast once in a while is nice.

John invited me to watch movies, so I went to his place. We ended up watching episodes of "Ugly Americans" (a weird humans and monsters cartoon from Comedy Central) and a Christmas "South Park" about forest animals who worshipped Satan. That's the spirit... not! But it was a good giggle.

The rest of my week has slow, but it's been kind of nice actually. I feel refreshed and ready for the new year. And I have a nice full slate already, starting with tomorrow, you'll just have to wait until next week for my adventures!

In rotation this week: I finished out my holiday music listening with a little bit of everything. I just placed some new CDs in my car today-- plenty of metal and blues to start the year rockin'.

Photos we got 'em: The usual cute animal pictures and one wonderful photo that was sent to me by Mark Indictor. Indictor is a staff software systems engineer at JPL on the Mars Science Laboratory mission and shared this shot of him by the project's launch pad. He's also the fiddle for Susie Glaze & the Hilonesome Band. Learn more about this cool cat under features at http://www.therosemag.com/

Thought o' the week: Resolve to rock. As the years change hands many of us come to the party with a long list of resolutions that we'll never live up to. We tend to select to change habits that are hard to break, at least all at once. A few of us pick out little things or smaller steps to that bigger change, yet it may still be unattainable.

As you think over what fresh start you want to make, be realistic. My goal is to be happier and healthier. Yes, its sounds humungous, but it's not really. I'm going to tweak my attitude throughout out the year and push my positivity whenever I feel the tug of negativity. As far as health, I'm going to continue to chart my progress on my calendar: morning workout, check, evening walk, check, stair climbing, check, evening workout, check, measure and weigh-in Sunday, check... and so on... I'll also make an solid effort to keep on the better eating track, although I'm pretty good about things now. (Perhaps I should give the chocolate in my desk drawer to my co-workers??).

OK, you get the idea. Whatever you choose, the most important thing is to resolve to rock at it. Here's toasting to a happy New Year's!

Keep on rockin'

Kit Cat Clock float to feature dancers at Rose Parade

USA Dance ballroom dancers and DanceSport athletes will entertain millions of parade watchers worldwide this January when the Kit-Cat® Clock float rolls down Colorado Boulevard in Pasadena, Calif. during the 2012 Tournament of Roses® Parade.

Kit-Cat Clocks, one of the best known household decorating items, is celebrating its 80th anniversary as a company with a nostalgic float remembering the eight decades since its founding with a float themed, “Timeless Fun for Everyone.” USA Dance DanceSport athletes -- both on the float and alongside -- will perform to 50’s Swing tunes during the parade and then showcase many styles of dancing at the Post Parade event.

On the float's dance stage, Aaron Altman, 12, and Rashell Khalfin, 11, will entertain a television audience of more than 50 million viewers worldwide and another three million spectators along the parade route. The young champion dancers have been dancing together for seven years, and will soon add the annual Rose Parade to their long list of appearances; including winning a junior competition on the hit show “Dancing With The Stars” in 2008.

"USA Dance and our local Los Angeles County Chapter, representing all ballroom and Latin dancers across America, are excited to be part of the Kit-Cat Clock float in the 2012 Tournament of Roses Parade. What better way to "swing in the new year" than "Dancing for America" in alliance with the California Clock Company, whose magnificent Kit-Cat float is a fun celebration and tribute to all that is American-made," stated Angela Prince, national spokesperson for USA Dance, the nonprofit ballroom dancing association, now with 174 active chapters throughout the U.S.

The Kit-Cat float will be an attention-getting entry alive with activity. At the center of the 55 ft. long parade entry will be a 24 ft. high black and white Kit-Cat, rolling its eyes, swinging its tail and wearing a contagious smile. In addition to the USA Dancers, dancing to tunes from a 50”s jukebox, eight skateboarders will zip on and off the float, and eight riders from eight to 80 years old, representing the children, parents, grandparents and great grandparents who have owned and loved a Kit-Cat Clock during the eight decades since the founding of the California Clock Company in 1932. Another eight USA Dancers will perform alongside the float.

“We are proud to be a part of American nostalgia, and we thought having dancers on the float would be a fun way to entertain spectators and show the 50’s, one of the most important decades Kit-Cat has been a part of,” said Woody Young, CEO, the California Clock Company, which manufactures Kit-Cat Clocks. “Classic tunes like ‘Rock around the Clock’ will bring the float to life and show what we are celebrating at Kit-Cat.”

Esotouric offers Black Dahlia crime bus tour Jan. 7

Bus Tour Rolls On the 65rd Anniversary of the Black Dahlia's Disappearance

WHAT: 65rd Anniversary Edition of Esotouric's Real Black Dahlia Crime Bus
Tour
WHEN: Saturday January 7, 12pm-4pm
WHERE: Departing from The Millennium Biltmore Hotel, 5th & Olive, L.A.
COST: $58/person
INFO: http://www.esotouric.com , 323-223-2767

On January 7, the eclectic bus adventure company Esotouric
offers a special anniversary edition of its most popular true crime tour,
THE REAL BLACK DAHLIA, on the 65rd Anniversary of the notorious kidnapping.
It was January 9, 1947 when Beth Short left the Biltmore Hotel for a nearby
bar and vanished, only to be found cut in two in a vacant Crenshaw District
lot six days later.

Since January 1947, this one iconic murder mystery has lingered unsolved at
the forefront of the American imagination, with dozens of books, films and
websites dedicated to solving the slaying of Beth Short, the Massachusetts
girl who came to Hollywood hoping to make it, and ended up cut in two in a
vacant lot. Suspects in the Black Dahlia murder have included L.A. Times
publisher Norman Chandler and Orson Welles, crazed lesbians, twisted
drifters and more than one writer's father, but still the mystery abides.

The Real Black Dahlia tour dedicates itself to revealing who victim
Elizabeth Short really was by exploring her life in Los Angeles from mid
1946 to her January 1947 murder through examination of the police
investigation and news coverage. The various theories are up for discussion
during the onboard Q&A sections, and the hosts share their idea of who the
killer might have been, but the focus is firmly on the 22-year-old woman
whose death continues to fascinate. Along the way, passengers will explore
the social history of postwar Los Angeles and its lively downtown scene and
learn the role the city played in Short's mysterious death.

The tour begins at the Biltmore Hotel in Downtown Los Angeles, where Beth
Short went after checking her bags at the Greyhound Terminal. Passengers
will tour the beautifully restored hotel before heading south, to the low
rent Olive Street bar where she met her murderer. The Downtown portion of
the tour includes the Examiner newspaper offices, where the crime became
myth as pioneering female City Editor Aggie Underwood spun the case for
weeks, and the Figueroa Hotel, where Short stayed in happier times.

The bus then heads west towards Leimert Park and the formerly vacant lot
where Short's bisected body was discovered on January 15, 1947. Also in this
neighborhood, passengers visit the site of another unsolved 1940s
kidnap-murder and the home of Dr. Walter Bayley, who has emerged in recent
years as the most compelling suspect, with his personal ties to Beth Short's
family and the crime scene, and the surgical skill needed to bisect the
body. The tour includes a cop-approved snack stop for coffee and donuts near
the body dump site.

The tour concludes at the Biltmore, where passengers may choose to linger
over a late afternoon tea to remember Beth Short.

Also featured: a special presentation from cosmetics historian Joan Renner
exploring Beth Short's unusual proto-goth make up, so different from the
popular girl next store look of 1947, and a key to understanding her
psychology.

Passengers on this eye-opening and informative tour will leave with a new
understanding of the Black Dahlia case and what it was like to be a single
woman in 1940s Los Angeles. It is highly recommended for natives and
newcomers, crime and history buffs and anyone who likes to seek out the
unexpected.

Ansel Adams Los Angeles
February 18 -March 17, 2012
Opening Reception Saturday, February 18, 2012 7-10pm

Ansel Adams Looking South on Hill Street, Los Angeles c.1939

drkrm is pleased to present Ansel Adams Los Angeles, rarely seen photographs that reveal the lost landscape and lifestyle of a prewar Los Angeles. These nostalgic images represent Ansel Adams as a photojournalist on assignment for Fortune Magazine in 1939. Ansel Adams Los Angeles will be on display from February 18 through March 17, 2012.

In 1939 Los Angeles had a population of 1.5 million. The cost of gas was 10 cents and a new car was $700. It was the year The Wizard of Oz and Gone With The Wind were released. Francis Ford Coppola, Ralph Lauren and Lee Harvey Oswald were born. Amelia Earhart was officially pronounced dead and President Roosevelt initiated the Manhattan Project. The U.S. began rearming for World War II and the prestigious Ansel Adams was commissioned by Fortune Magazine to photograph a series of images for an article covering the aviation industry in the Los Angeles area. For the project, Adams took over 200 black & white photographs showing everyday life, businesses, street scenes and a variety of other subjects. But when the article, City of the Angels, appeared in the March 1941 issue, only a few of the images were included.

In the early 1960s Adams rediscovered the photographs among papers at his home in Carmel and donated them to the Los Angeles Public Library. He wrote in a letter: "The weather was bad over a rather long period and none of the pictures were very good... I would imagine that they represent about $100.00 minimum value... At any event, I do not want them back." But as many critics will agree, sometimes an artist is not always the best judge of their own work.

Ansel Adams (1902-1984) created some of the most influential photographs ever made; he was one of this century's leading exponents of environmental values. It seems that every third family in America has an Adams’ poster on the wall, images that were difficult to make but easy to love. His images portray a romanticized and unspoiled Western American landscape, but Ansel Adams Los Angeles is a whole other body of work that is rarely discussed, let alone seen.

drkrm, in association with EVFA (Edgar Varela Fine Arts), and with the cooperation of the Los Angeles Public Library, will create and exhibit new silver-gelatin prints made from the original negatives. These dramatic black and white limited-edition photographs, on display to the public for the first time, will be offered for purchase with a portion of the proceeds benefiting the LAPL.

Ansel Adams Los Angeles is part of Pacific Standard Time. Pacific Standard Time is an unprece-dented collaboration of more than sixty cultural institutions across Southern California, coming together to tell the story of the birth of the L.A. art scene. The Flying Karamazov Brother in Cerritors Feb. 3

They can tickle your brain while thrilling your
eyes,* said The Washington Post of the award-winning troupe The Flying
Karamazov Brothers. The internationally acclaimed quartet brings its
exciting vaudevillian comedy-and-juggling spectacle, 4 Play, to the
Cerritos Center for the Performing Arts on Friday, February 3, 8:00 PM.
Tickets, which are $59-$39, can be purchased at the CCPA Ticket Office,
at www.cerritoscenter.com or by calling (562) 467-8818.

Expect the unexpected with THE FLYING KARAMAZOV BROTHERS IN 4 PLAY. The
self-proclaimed eccentric *lunatics* spice things up with a zany
showcase filled with the astonishing juggling feats, laugh-out-loud
comedy, and wild theatrics that have taken them to Broadway, television,
and the big screen.

What started as a street act in 1970s San Francisco has grown into a
phenomenon that has toured to mass appeal throughout America and Europe.
Members of The Flying Karamazov Brothers don*t actually fly in their
routines, but everything else does * in sweeping, gravity-defying
arcs: swords, apples, torches, fish, windy philosophies, theatrics, and
jokes. *Imagine a quartet of master jugglers, multi-instrument
musicians, circus clowns, improv comics, esoteric satirists, and playful
techno-wizards who tap dance,* said the Los Angeles Times, and it all
becomes *magically indescribable.*

The juggling is *infectious,* hails The New York Times. *The
flurry of pins that somehow never collide becomes more than a display of
hard-earned skill and teamwork. In portraying a communal effort as
sublime play, it evokes the utopian ideal of a group that has achieved a
perfect understanding.*

Known for consistently testing the laws of physics, The Flying
Karamazov Brothers often invites members of the audience to contribute
items for juggling. The group*s die-hard fans have been known to come
prepared with odd items, including a baby carrier, cold cuts, pepperoni
pizzas, and huge blocks of ice. Adept with a wide range of conventional
instruments, The Flying Karamazov Brothers amps up the excitement by
making its own music, using clubs that are adapted as percussion
strikers to allow the troupe to play drums and marimba phones without
breaking juggling patterns.

The Flying Karamazov Brothers* wild and physically demanding antics
won the ensemble a 1981 Obie Award for *Outstanding Achievement in the
Off-Broadway and Off-Off Broadway Theatre* and a 2004 *Award of
Excellence* from the International Jugglers* Association. The group
has appeared on the television sitcoms Seinfeld and Ellen and in the
film The Jewel of the Nile.

For tickets or more information on The Flying Karamazov Brothers* 4
Play performance at the CCPA, call (562) 467-8818 or go to

Musica Angelica to present 'Stabat Mater" Jan. 28 and 29

Scarcely a month after the season celebrating the birth of Christ, Musica Angelica will take music lovers on a journey to the end of Christ’s life when it presents Giovanni Battista Pergolesi’s Stabat Mater on Saturday, January 28 at 8 p.m. at AT&T Center Theatre in Los Angeles and on Sunday, January 29 at 3 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church in Santa Monica.

Stabat Mater, which translates as “the Mother was standing,” is a musical depiction of the suffering of the Virgin Mary as she witnesses her son’s death on the cross. But, despite the sorrowful nature of the work – “Does it not cause tears to fall?” asked a reviewer in 1778 – Stabat Mater soon became the most popular piece of sacred music ever written, says Musica Angelica’s Music Director, Martin Haselböck.

“Pergolesi’s early death in his mid-20s did not stop the enormous success of this wonderful piece of vocal music,” continues Haselböck whose “affinity for early music and feeling for religious moments in music” were hailed by Krone Wien after he conducted a performance last month of Bach’s B-Minor Mass and Christmas Oratorio by Wiener Akademie.

“Even Bach wanted to have it performed at his church in Leipzig,” Haselböck relates. “The text of the Latin original, however, would have been unacceptable for Bach’s Lutheran congregation, so Bach put the text of a German psalm under the original music, changed a few notes, and so brought Pergolesi's masterwork to his native Germany.”

Joining Musica Angelica for the performances of Bach’s version of the Stabat Mater are soprano Dame Emma Kirkby, one of the world’s most celebrated early music specialists, and countertenor Daniel Taylor. The program will also include songs and arias by J.S. Bach as well as arias and duets from George Frideric Handel’s oratorio, Solomon and Theodora.

“The extraordinary voices of Emma Kirkby and Daniel Taylor will shine in all their beauty," Haselböck promises.

Musica Angelica is especially grateful for the generous sponsorship received from Classical KUSC and Harold and Penny Ray in support of these concerts. Tickets for Stabat Mater are reasonably priced, ranging from $29 to $49/person, with seniors receiving a 10% discount ($26 to $44) and students a special price of only $15 with valid identification. In addition, members of KUSC and SCEMS receive $10 off single ticket prices. Subscription discounts are also available, with first time subscribers receiving 30% off their subscription. For more information, to purchase a subscription, or to order tickets, visit www.musicaangelica.org or call 310.458.4504.

AT&T Center Theatre is located at 1150 South Olive Street in Los Angeles, 90015.

First Presbyterian Church is located at 1220 2nd Street in Santa Monica, 90402.

Los Fabulocos in Arcadia Dec. 30

Count-Down Begins This Friday Nite!

We're celebrating the closing of 2011, which proved to be prosperous and positive year for Los FabuLocos.

Our 2nd CD "Dos" was released in Feb. and climbed up the "Roots Music" charts to #4 in March.
The CD was reviewed by 30 national and international music critics, all which praised the musics for its originality, variety and all around performances (oh yes and artwork).

Our first trip to Canada was such a success that we've been invited to return in 2012 to perform at their "Annual Folk Music Festival" in Edmonton.

We've been invited and are in negotiations for a Spring 2012 tour in Europe, as we start off the year with a trip to Texas in the middle February.

Also on the positive side, Los FabuLocos acquired the very talented guitarist Al Martinez (Moonlight Trio).

Al understands the "traditional" and "roots" side of our music, he is winning over fans with nothing but praise and applause at every performance, he is also a great guy with the right attitude.

So once again we're Celebrating Friday night December 30, 2011

Arcadia Blues Club (the A.B.C.)

16 E. Huntington Dr. Arcadia, CA.

Frist Fridays returns to Natural History Museum of LA County Jan. 6

Live music, cutting edge authors, lively science discussion, and curatorial tours converge at First Fridays, the popular after-hours series that returns to the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County (NHM) on Friday, January 6, 2012 and runs through June 1. The new season, “This Time It’s Personal,” includes a slate of speakers that explore new side of science — the people behind it, and their passions. Speakers include Michael Shermer, Amy Parish, Michael Brown, Jared Diamond, Amy Stewart, and Jonah Lehrer. Tickets are available online at www.nhm.org/firstfridays.

Resuming his post to moderate discussions is Dr. Michael W. Quick, Department of Biological Sciences and Executive Vice Provost at USC. Quick says that what’s new this year is a focus on the visiting scientists as passionate people. “The act of discovery is an art, and in that way, any of us could be scientists,” he explained. “If we could explain that better, we’d have a world of scientists out there, because it’s really about just wondering, and trying to figure things out, solving puzzles, getting excited and wanting to know more. That’s science!”

Join us at First Fridays 2012 as we all become scientists for a night — discussing topics that range from bugs to beliefs and from primates to Pluto.

KCRW DJ Anthony Valadez returns as resident in the DJ Lounge for the series, with special guest appearances by other DJs from the public radio station (heard on air at 89.9FM and online at KCRW.com) each month. As in past seasons, music lovers will pack in to NHM’s North American Mammal Hall to watch some of the hottest indie bands of the year. Headlining the first three dates are Mariachi El Bronx (January 6), The Soft Moon (February 3), and Zola Jesus (March 2). Spaceland productions will once again be handling music talent.

2012 SEASON DATES:

January 6, 2012 – “The Believing Brain: From Ghosts and Gods to Politics and Conspiracies—How We Construct Beliefs and Reinforce Them as Truths” with Dr. Michael Shermer

February 3, 2012 – “The New Science of Darwinian Feminism Evolutionary Insights From Bonobo Social and Sexual Interactions” with Dr. Amy Parish

March 2, 2012 – “How I Killed Pluto and Why It Had It Coming” with Dr. Michael Brown

** March 30, 2012 – “Is It Good or Bad That the World Has so Many Languages” with Dr. Jared Diamond

May 4, 2012 – “Wicked Bugs — Fearsome and Ferocious Creatures in Your Backyard and Beyond” with Amy Stewart

June 1, 2012 – “The Imagination Is Made of Other People” with Jonah Lehrer
** This date replaces the first Friday of April, which is Good Friday

End o' Week Musings

This week is flowing smoothly and I'll be out of the office through Monday. You think "Aha! More R&R." But not really, as I plan to work on a new costume~ sewing away like mad!!

Saturday I went with my friend Byron to his sisters' home in Rancho Cucamonga. We decided to go out to look at lights. Susan wasn't feeling too well, so she opted out, but Stephanie valiantly offered to drive the SUV. We piled in and spent three hours enjoying all the different displays.

Unfortunately, three hours sitting in a SUV isn't good for my back, so when Sunday rolled around I had trouble rolling out of bed. I was due to go with my friend Louise to visit Carin and do a few odd jobs at her place. I managed to get us there, but I was still in a bit of pain. Carin said to let the work go for the day, as my time would be better spent in the hot tub. Of course, that suited me. It felt quite decadent to be in the final throes of fall crispness and soaking in a bubbling spa.

Back home, I babied myself with a soak in the tub that night and a some time with the heating pad. Plus I stretched a bit too. By morning I was doing much better, which was good, as I had to work.

It's been a pleasant week with holiday lunches, potluck and other treats. Still, there's been work to do. I interviewed Jimmy Pou, who plays George Harrison in the Beatles tribute band, 4 Lads from Liverpool ( http://www.4ladsfromliverpool.com/ ). They will be performing at the Grove Theatre in Upland for a special New Year's Eve event. I also spoke with comedienne Carin Webb, who will be performing with Bill Word & Friends ( http://www.killerkomedy.com/ ) at the Moose Lodge in Whittier Jan. 28.

In rotation: Tons o' holiday music by a range of artists and enjoying all of it! I'm trying to keep in the spirit of the season....

Photos we got 'em: A "California Christmas" image of lights taken with my cell phone, my friend Shahira's kitty and pup (Tink) decked out for the holidays and a couple of cute pet pics from the web.

Thought o' the week: Peace. There's a card on my desk showing a photo of a baby polar bear and his mother in the middle of a landscape of snow and it simply says "peace" on the front. There's something about this that hits home with me.

Peace can both be an inside and an outside thing. You can emit an aura of peace, as in having a calming effect on other because of your demeanor. You can also receive peace from the outside world by listening to relaxing music, taking a walking in nature and other things. You can create your own inner peace by just sitting quietly for a few minutes and letting go of all your worries. And so on.

There's a time to be revved up and energetic, but there's also a time for reflection and serenity. Take a few minutes somewhere each day during this hectic season to find your peace and pass it on to someone else who needs a little too. Elvis Costello's song asked "What's so funny about peace, love and understanding?" Only the little smile it brings to the weary world.

Whatever way you celebrate the season, enjoy and

Keep on rockin'

Work by Carol Powell and Allison Krumwiede to be shown in Pomona

The dA CENTER FOR THE ARTS Presents:
Textural Play: The Works of Carol Powell &
Mad, Bad, and Dangerous to Know: The Works of Allison Krumwiede
January 14 through January 28, 2012.
Opening Reception: January 14, 2012, 6:00 pm – 10:00 pm

The dA Center for the Arts is proud to present Textural Play: The Works of Carol Powell and Mad, Bad, and Dangerous to Know: The Works of Allison Krumwiede on display January 14th through January 28th, 2012. Featuring the works of two up-and-coming Southern Californian artists, together these exhibitions utilize familiar imagery to produce both playful and self-reflective pieces. The dA will be hosting an opening reception on January 14th from 6:00 pm to 10:00 pm.

On display in the main gallery, Textural Play: The Works of Carol Powell is an exploration of life’s humorous and tragic circumstances. Powell creates nostalgic story-book style imagery in
her mixed media pieces that combine fabric, paint, marker and vintage collage ephemera. Powell received both a MA in Printmaking and a MFA in Drawing and Painting from California
State University, Fullerton. Her art has been shown and held in various collections including the Santa Barbara Museum, California State Polytechnic University, Pomona and the Santa Monica Museum of Art.

On display in the Joan Weldon Gallery, Mad, Bad, and Dangerous to Know features newcomer Allison Krumwiede. A recent graduate from the Art Center College of Design, Krumwiede’s
pop culture inspired illustrations bridge the gap between Pop Art and DIY culture. Pieces selected for this exhibition range from zines about River Phoenix to an over-sized Beatles album
cover.

Silverstein to tour and release new album

While the rest of the industry settles down for the holiday, Toronto-based post-hardcore veterans SILVERSTEIN are not only preparing for the release of SHORT SONGS on February 7, 2012, they're also getting their tour shoes laced up and ready to run. Preparing for a national tour supporting August Burns Red (additional support from Texas In July with Letlive and I The Breather on assorted dates), the eight week US and Canadian trek kicks off on January 13th at Starland Ballroom in Sayreville, NJ and circles around North America, wrapping up in Philadelphia at the TLA on March 3rd.

Short Songs is the follow-up to their critically acclaimed fifth studio album Rescue, which debuted at #37 on Billboard’s Top 200 Album Chart. Produced by John Valeriote, who produced both Rescue and the Transitions EP, the two-sided release consists of 22 tracks comprised of brand new originals and seminal punk covers - all of which are under 90 seconds. Some of the covers include "Coffee Mug" (originally by Descendents), "Destination: Blood!" (Orchid), "Scenes From Parisian Life" (The Promise Ring), and "The Ballad of Wilhelm Fink" (Green Day). Responding to a thread on Punknews.org, the band had some fun and re-recorded NOFX's "It's My Job To Keep Punk Rock Elite" and changing the lyrics to reflect their reply to some of the comments on the post. The result was a tongue-in-cheek non-album track exclusively streamed at http://www.punknews.org/bands/silverstein titled "It's Your Job To Keep Punk News Elite."

Silverstein is Shane Told (Vocals / Guitar), Neil Boshart (Guitar), Josh Bradford (Guitar), Billy Hamilton (Bass), and Paul Koehler (Drums). Silverstein will be releasing Short Songs via Hopeless Records on February 7, 2012 and touring extensively throughout North America and Europe in 2012.

Fishbone documentary to premiere on TV Jan. 22

Everyday Sunshine: The Story of Fishbone will have its national broadcast premiere on Monday, January 22nd, 2012 as part of public television's AfroPoP documentary series. The series, produced by the National Black Programming Consortium (NBPC) and co-presented by American Public Television (APT), kicks off it's new season with Everyday Sunshine: The Story of Fishbone, which documents the history of legendary Los Angeles band Fishbone.

The film is being distributed via digital and home video by Cinema Guild, which will present the film exclusively via ITunes starting February 1st, 2012 as part of the celebration of Black History Month and then via home video starting February 22nd, 2012.

When Fishbone first emerged from California, no other band sounded or looked like them, and the weight of their innovative and iconic presence is still being felt decades later. Coinciding with the group’s 25th anniversary, filmmakers Lev Anderson & Chris Metzler have directed a compelling new documentary, narrated by Laurence Fishburne. Everyday Sunshine: The Story of Fishbone is both a fascinating and brutally honest look at the band’s history for longtime fans, as well as a perfect entry point for newcomers.

Everyday Sunshine is a documentary about the band Fishbone, musical pioneers who have been rocking on the margins of pop culture for the past 25 years. From the streets of South Central-Los Angeles and the competitive Hollywood music scene of the 1980's, the band rose to prominence, only to fall apart when on the verge of "making it."

Laurence Fishburne narrates Everyday Sunshine, an entertaining cinematic journey into the personal lives of this unique Black rock band, and an untold story of fiercely individual artists in their quest to reclaim their musical legacy while debunking the myths of young Black men from urban America. Highlighting the parallel journeys of a band and their city, Everyday Sunshine explores the personal and cultural forces that gave rise to California's legendary Black punk sons that continue to defy categories and expectations.

At the heart of Fishbone's story is lead singer Angelo Moore and bassist Norwood Fisher who show how they keep the band rolling, out of pride, desperation and love for their art. To overcome money woes, family strife, and the strain of being aging Punk rockers on the road, Norwood and Angelo are challenged to re-invent themselves in the face of dysfunction and ghosts from a painful past.

The documentary includes interviews with: Gwen Stefani (No Doubt), Flea (Red Hot Chili Peppers), Ice-T (rapper), Branford Marsalis (saxophonist), Perry Farrell (Jane’s Addiction, Porno For Pyros), Questlove (The Roots), and more.

New EP, Crazy Glue, Available in Stores Now!

Tom Maxwell releases holiday single

The former lead vocalist and frontman for the Squirrel Nut Zippers, Tom Maxwell has just released the single “Jacob Marley.” With a theme to warm with hearts of Occupiers everywhere, it’s a holiday song of our times.

Recorded live with his band The Minor Drag on November 26, 2011 at The Murphey School in Durham NC, the track is the first holiday release from Maxwell since the release of 1998’s Christmas Caravan by the Squirrel Nut Zippers.

“I wrote ‘Jacob Marley’ after the economy tanked and the banks got bailed out,” Tom commented. “It was a disaster - and rip off - of almost mythic proportions. In the song, cultural icons like Brother Rabbit (a nod to Br'er Rabbit from the Uncle Remus stories) and Jacob Marley (Scrooge's dead business parter and spiritual benefactor in A Christmas Carol) appear but can't change the situation.”

“Extraordinary problems require extraordinary solutions, and I believe the Occupy movement and the social and political consciousness it represents is our last and best hope. Jacob Marley may not come back again, but we can handle this one on our own.”

A Noise Within to present two plays in March

A NOISE WITHIN OPENS TWO PRODUCTIONS IN MARCH

SHAKESPEARE’S ANTHONY AND CLEOPATRA
Saturday, March 3, to Sunday, May 13, 2012
(previews begin Saturday, February 25)

TONY KUSHNER’S ADAPTATION OF THE ILLUSION BY PIERRE CORNEILLE
Saturday, March 17, to Saturday, May 19, 2012
(previews begin March 10)

A Noise Within (ANW), the acclaimed classical repertory theatre company, continues its inaugural season in its permanent new home in Pasadena, with two productions in rotation in March.

WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE’s ANTONY AND CLEOPATRA, opening Saturday, March 3 and closing Sunday, May 13, 2012 (previews begin Saturday, February 25), remains a towering tragedy of larger-than-life figures caught up in an empire-shattering dance of lust, love, politics and war. Long on the ANW wish list, it was an early choice for the inaugural Pasadena season, according to Geoff Elliott, who co-directs with Julia Rodriguez-Elliott. “Until now, we just didn’t have the physical capability to give this play, with its many battle scenes and great surround, the grandness it deserves,” he notes. “The depth of our new space has opened up tremendous artistic possibilities for us.” Both history play and sweeping love story, Antony and Cleopatra is undeniably one of the most challenging works in the Shakespeare canon to bring to the stage. Indeed, the last Broadway revival of the classic was in 1952, with a cast headed by real-life star-crossed lovers Vivien Leigh and Laurence Olivier.

What is reality and what is not? In THE ILLUSION by PIERRE CORNEILLE, adapted by TONY KUSHNER and directed by Casey Stangl, opening Saturday, March 17 and closing Saturday, May 19, 2012 (previews begin Saturday, March 10), a father seeks to reunite with his estranged son. When he enlists the services of a powerful sorcerer to conjure up scenes from the young man’s life, however, the provocative images that the sorcerer shows the anxious father may or may not be quite what they seem. Tony Kushner (Angels in America) triumphantly revitalizes this 17th century theatrical fairy tale, first told by French classical dramatist Pierre Corneille in 1639, and the intoxicating result is poetic and profound, timely and transcendent, comic and moving, and a luminous paean to live theatre and the celebratory theme of this ANW season.

Single tickets are $46 (Friday and Saturday evenings and Sunday matinees); and $42 (Wednesday, Thursday and Sunday evenings and Saturday matinees). Groups (10 or more) are $27 (weekdays and Saturday matinees), and $32 (Saturday evenings and Sunday matinees); School Groups (10 or more) are $16 (weekdays and matinees), or $20 (Saturday evenings).

A NOISE WITHIN is located on the corner of Foothill Boulevard and Sierra Madre Villa Avenue at 3352 East Foothill Blvd., Pasadena, CA 91107. Free self parking is located in the Sierra Madre Villa Metro parking structure, with entrances on northbound Sierra Madre Villa Avenue or North Halstead Street. Valet parking is also available. To purchase tickets, call (626) 356-3100 or visit www.ANoiseWithin.org.
