End o' week musings

It's been a long, hard week, but the sun is out and thing's are looking up.

On Saturday I attended Lighten Up SGV's Women Wellness event. I had a blood test for glucose, cholesterol and so on, along with my BMI and learned that I'm not going to pop over, but I do need to keep working on things. Then I listened to a cardiac specialist talk about heart attacks and women. I was surprised to learn that when women (sorry if you nibbling now) vomit, it's not always the flu or food poisoning, but in fact it can be one of the biggest indicators of a serious health problem, such as an impending heart attack. Ladies! Read more about this at The Skinny www.insidesocal.com/dieting later today. The heart doctor was followed by a motivational speaker, who was very good. She emphasized eliminating stress and making time for yourself.

Sunday I went to Obie's memorial. We went out to sea on a boat from San Pedro and released his ashes in the water, along with sweet words and bright flowers. It had been a cloudy day, but as we finished a spot of sun appeared. Later, we went to Carin and Tom's for the rest of the memorial and a full barbecue dinner catered by Johnny Reb's. I'll admit I drank enough martinis and champagne to feel good, but I needed it to melt away my tears. Overall though, the day was filled with lots of laughter, which Obie definitely would have enjoyed.

Monday I went to Byron's father Paul's funeral. There was a lot of speakers and singing. He had a huge family, but the organizers did a great job of selecting people to represent the various groups, such as the grandchildren, etc. so that it didn't go on too long. It was a fitting service and offered some comfort.

I was pretty wiped out emotionally the next few days, but my interview with Pasadena Rose Magazine Woman of the Year Elsie Sadler raised my spirits. She is the volunteer's volunteer, as she is happy and humming and has done so much for so many over the years and still keeps looking for where else there might be a need.

Tomorrow I plan to catch "The Lorax" with my favorite movie critic Vernor @vernorsticket and I have a Danse Macabre (my Renaissance Faire troupe) meeting/party in the evening. It's funny, I've been trying to eat better so when we were discussing the party at band practice this week, I offered to bring a veggie tray. My idea was met with an emphatic NO! Please bring one of your chocolate goodies! How about the peanut butter fudge? OK, chocolate and peanut butter it is... They better like it.... Now, how many sit-ups will it cost me??

In rotation this week: Orange Sky, Elton John and Leon Russell, Cheryl Wheeler, Joe Louis Walker and The Voodoo Fix.

Photos we got 'em: My friend Sally sent me this cute graphic she made, so I had to share... and then my usual cute pet pix from the web.

Thought o' the week: Do your research. I've been shopping around for a new sewing machine. I have a machine that my friend gave me, but it's very old and the bobbin is giving me grief, so I'm on the hunt for something new. I went to several stores and the sales people were very nice (most sewing people tend to be friendly and helpful) and tried to steer me towards machines they favored. I listened, took down a few notes and thanked them for their time.

Back home, I have invested a nice chunk of time on the web reading reviews, comparisons and other information on the models that most interested me and boy, I'm glad I did. I discovered that the one that I was leaning the hardest towards is noted for - you guessed it! - bobbin troubles! Oh, no, not going down that road again. My second choice got much better reviews and the one the sales lady touted, but I was still not totally convinced is one of the top recommended brands and models right now in its price range.

What I'm getting at here is twofold: things are not always what you think and it pays off to spend a little time looking deeper, especially when you're making any kind of investment- financial or relationship-wise. (Just 'cause he's cute and exciting doesn't mean he'll treat you right.) Whatever you do, take my cue and do your research.

Keep on rockin'

Mickie
