TESSA BRINCKMAN flute
KIMBERLY FITCH viola
DANNY HOLT piano
CalArts Professor of Piano Danny Holt returns to Second Sundays At Two with his colleagues from the Northwest - New Zealand-native flutist Tessa Brinkman and violistKimberly Fitch - to explore selections for this rare ensemble of instruments. In their inaugural performance as a trio, these dynamic performers shine a light on the surprisingly rich repertoire for flute, viola, and piano.
The Artists
New Zealand flutist Tessa Brinckman, described by Gramophone as a "flutist of chameleon-like gifts" and "virtuoso elegance," is in demand as a versatile performer on modern and historical flutes, in concert series and festival throughout the West Coast of the United States. Her critically acclaimed composition and CD, "Glass Sky," is featured in the South African documentary "Inner Landscapes." She serves on the faculties of Southern Oregon University and Rogue Community College, and teaches masterclasses in the USA and abroad.
Violist Kimberly Fitch holds a Bachelor of Music from the Eastman School of Music, and Master of Music in Viola Performance from UC Santa Barbara. Kimberly's primary teachers have included world-renowned violists Helen Callus and Phillip Ying of the Ying Quartet. She recently performed the Carl Stamitz Concerto with the Rogue Valley Symphony, and the Bartók Viola Concerto with the University Symphony Orchestra in Santa Barbara as a first-place winner of the Concerto Soloists Competition.
Called "exceptional" by the Los Angeles Times, pianist Danny Holt specializes in performing contemporary works, 20th century music, and obscure and neglected repertoire from past centuries. The late music critic Alan Rich praised one of Holt's recent performances as "phenomenal" and The Record (Waterloo, Ontario) called him "the classical music equivalent of an extreme sports athlete."
The Program
Maurice Duruflé (1902-1986)
Prelude, Recitative, and Variations, Op.3 (1928)
for flute, viola, and piano
Pierre Auclert (1905-1975)
Trio (1926)
for flute, viola, and piano
Albert Huybrechts (1899-1938)
Trio (1926)
for flute, viola, and piano
Zack Browning
Hakka Fusion (2009)
for flute, viola, and piano
In their Los Angeles debut, these dynamic performers shine a light on the surprisingly rich repertoire for flute, viola, and piano. Duruflé's Prelude, Recitative, and Variations from 1928 indulges in a colorful impressionistic sound-world akin to that of Debussy and Ravel. Rarely heard Trios by Pierre Auclert and Albert Huybrechts from 1926 take that familiar early 20th century French sound a few steps closer to the modernism of more commonly recognized composers such as Messiaen and Bartók. Rounding out the program is the rocking Hakka Fusion (2009) by contemporary composer Zack Browning, a driving, rhythmic, crowd-pleaser.
The Venue
The sanctuary's acoustics are among the finest in Southern California. The venue's idyllic sylvan setting next to the South Coast Botanic Garden on the north-east corner of Crenshaw Blvd. and Palos Verdes Drive North makes the concert experience especially pleasant.
