K9K Pet Cancer Awareness Walk in Long Beach Nov. 11

The 6th Annual VPI K9K Pet Cancer Awareness Walk will benefit the Animal Cancer Foundation, a non-profit founded by Veterinary Oncologist Dr. Gerald Post; that supports research to advance the prevention and treatment of cancer in people and pets, also called Comparative Oncology.

Comparative Oncology shows that our domestic pets, and not laboratory animals, such as mice and rats, are the true models for human cancer,” says Dr. Post.  Our pets, like people, get cancer spontaneously so it only makes sense to integrate pet cancer into the human research model. Comparative Oncology will expedite therapeutic and preventative benefits for both humans and pets.”

For the first time, Dr. Post will be discussing Comparative Oncology at the Society for Melanoma Research Congress 2012 in Los Angeles, Nov. 8-11, the same weekend as the VPI K9K Pet Cancer Awareness Walk in Long Beach.  Post will speak to human Oncologists about the biologic similarities of cancer in pets and people and the importance of collaborating efforts to ultimately lead to the discovery of more effective treatments and prevention of cancer in people and pets.

With that said, here is the info. on the upcoming event this Sunday in Long Beach.  Please let me know if you are interested in speaking with someone about the event, the Animal Cancer Foundation or Comparative Oncology.
