Visitors of all ages can be a part of the fun and excitement of Chinese New Year during two special events celebrating the Year of the Snake at The Huntington Library, Art Collections, and Botanical Gardens. The festivities will get under way on Sunday, Jan. 27, with a Chinese Cultural Arts Celebration from 10:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Artists from Jiangsu Province, China, will demonstrate beautiful traditional crafts such as paper lanterns shaped like lotuses, kites in the form of soaring birds, sugar sculpture, intricate paper cutting, Chinese knotting, and embroidered silk art. The Nanjing Little Red Flowers children’s ensemble will give two performances of traditional folk dance and song (at noon and 3 p.m.), and an exhibition of photography titled “China on the Wings” will be on view.
The celebration continues on Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 16–17, when The Huntington will present its annual Chinese New Year Festival. This year’s event will include lion dancers (at 11 a.m., 1 p.m., and 3 p.m. both days), crowd-pleasing performances of bian lian (mask changing), plus martial arts demonstrations, folk music, tea tastings, children’s book readings, and more. Visitors will also have an opportunity to savor the flavors of authentic Chinese cuisine.
East West Bank is the sole corporate sponsor of The Huntington’s Chinese New Year events. Additional funding provided by the Justin Vajna Memorial Fund for Educational Programs in the Chinese Garden and The Cheng Family Foundation.
The Chinese Cultural Arts Celebration on Jan. 27 is made possible in part by Jiangsu Cultural Association and the Ministry of Culture of the People’s Republic of China, the Consulate General of the People’s Republic of China in Los Angeles, Beauty Media Inc., and ICN TV Network.
