'I Don't Have to Show You No Stinking Badges' at Casa 101 Feb. 1

Casa 0101 Theater, Josefina López, Artistic Director, will present the play, “I Don’t Have To Show You No Stinking Badges” written by Luis Valdez, starring Carmelita Maldonado, Daniel Edward Mora, Elizabeth Pan and Alex Valdivia under the direction of
Hector Rodriguez.   This is the first new production of the play in Los Angeles in 25 years.

This production is made possible in part thanks to the generous support of Casa 0101 sponsors, including The Sheri and Les Biller Family Foundation, the California Endowment, the Los Angeles County Arts Commission, the Herb Alpert Foundation, Community Redevelopment Agency of Los Angeles – Designated Local Authority, the California Foundation for Stronger Communities, the Ralph M. Parsons Foundation and Metro.

WHAT:          The play is set in the Monterey Park area of Greater Los Angeles in 1985, the play examines cultural stereotypes and prejudices, when Sonny Villa, a bright teenaged, Chicano, Harvard Pre-Law student, unexpectedly returns home to his showbiz parents in Monterey Park with an older Asian-American woman he met on the road to make an important announcement.
Concurrently with the run of the play an art exhibition entitled,“Coalescing – The Sleeping Giant,” which focuses on Latino identity in America, will be available for viewing.  The Latino population has become increasingly diverse by national origin and The Sleeping Giant has awakened.  Casa 0101 Theater’s production of Luis Valdez’s play, “I Don’t Need To Show You No Stinking Badges” explores issues of the Latino voice and identity, during the Chicano movement in East Los Angeles.  “Coalescing – The Sleeping Giant” will be a visual account of the Latino experience, exploring the theme of identity and the process of unification from the past, present and future.  It will explore this debated topic through color on canvas, photography, experimentation and mixed media featuring the work of acclaimed local and international artists including Emilia Garcia, Raul Gonzalez, John Carlos Del La Luna and Francisco Norzagaray.  The Opening Reception will be held in the The Jean Deleage Art Gallery at Casa 0101 Theater on Thursday, January 31, 2013 from 6:00 – 10:00 p.m.
