AIDS Walk Los Angeles

October 19, 2008

WHAT: AIDS Walk Los Angeles

WHEN: October 19, 2008. Opening ceremony: 9:15 a.m. Walk begins: 10:00 a.m.

WHO: 30,000 people, including a roster of celebrity hosts, will flood the streets of West Hollywood and Los Angeles to raise millions for the fight against AIDS. This year’s confirmed celebrity hosts include: The Hon. Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa; Rachel Griffiths (Brothers & Sisters); Sean Astin (Lord of the Rings); Linda Cardellini (ER); Alan Cumming (Spy Kids, X2); Loretta Devine (Eli Stone); Holly Madison (Girls Next Door); Camryn Manheim (Ghost Whisperer); and John Schneider (Smallville).

WHERE: The AIDS Walk begins and ends in the heart of West Hollywood at San Vicente Boulevard, between Melrose Avenue and Santa Monica Boulevard. The 10k (6.2 mile) route traverses the streets of both West Hollywood and Los Angeles.

WHY: The event coincides with recent announcements that the number of people living with HIV in the U.S. has hit an all-time high; the number of new infections nationwide is 40 percent higher than previously reported; and more people than ever before (60,000) are living with the disease in Los Angeles County.

MORE:
It’s the largest AIDS fundraiser in Southern California. This year’s event is also one of the greenest of its kind, as the Green Walker aims to cut the event’s environmental impact by a full 25 percent.
