Soulful singer-songwriter Paula Nelson and her band, recently seen playing shows for music industry reps and fans in Nashville that earned glowing reviews, will play a show in San Juan Capistrano after New Year's of the solid rockers, ballads, power anthems and love songs from their latest album, LUCKY 13 (Pedernales Records).
Nelson and the Paula Nelson Band play at 9 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 28, 2009, at The Coach House Concert Hall, 33157 Camino Capistrano. Tickets are $10; information: 949.496.8930. Nick I (of Common Sense) is also on the bill.
In Nashville in November, Nelson and the band drew praise from the state's Daily Times: "... And with a stellar album like LUCKY 13, that's a more-than-admirable effort -- it's downright successful, because that husky, sexy voice and those killer riffs and that tight rhythm section make for something honest and true."
MusicRow.com made note of the album's latest single, the Nelson original "Every Now and Then," saying she "displays an attractive bluesy lilt in her country phrasing. ..."
Another song on the disc, the elegant "Day to Day Love," features Willie Nelson and Paula's brother, Luke Nelson, but Texas Music Times pointed out when it was released that LUCKY 13 "stands all on its own with or without a famous name. A must-have."
Backed by a guitar-driven Southern rock sound, the singer-songwriter with alto-to-soprano lead vocals, strong keyboards learned at her aunt's knee, and writing depth and breadth grew up in the aura of her outlaw-country music-making father and his compadres, influenced by the vocals of such models as Rita Coolidge and the caring encouragement of Austin club owner Clifford Antone. By the early 1990s, she was performing all over Austin and appearing with her father often.
Onstage with Nelson -- also a martial-arts master, stunt woman and stunt driver, and actress (her first movie, "Conflict of Interest,"due for release in 2009) -- are guitarist Landis Armstrong, drummer Kevin Remme and well-known Austin vocalist-guitarist George Devore.
