Pasadena General Plan open house Nov. 14

Live entertainment, art projects, interactive exhibits, roundtable discussions, speaker sessions, children’s activities, prizes, food and more will be featured at Pasadena’s General Plan open house extravaganza Saturday, Nov. 14, from 1 to 5 p.m.

The multifaceted event, indoors and outdoors at 345 S. Lake Ave. (former Stein Mart), is the culmination of a six-month effort to gather input about the land use, mobility, and open space and conservation elements of Pasadena’s General Plan – the blueprint for the community’s future. Thousands of Pasadenans have been mobilized through community meetings, MoveAbout tours, a speaker series, council district workshops, an interactive website and much more.

Residents, business owners and other community stakeholders will hear what others have defined as priorities and make sure their voices have been included as Pasadena’s future is mapped out.

“Whether you have 20 minutes to spare or the full four hours, we’ll make it worth your while,” said Stephanie DeWolfe, deputy director of the Pasadena Planning and Development Department. “We have designed this event with a multitude of activities going on at the same time.”

A 3-D “Virtual Pasadena” computer model will makes its debut and visitors will be invited to participate in two community-building art projects – one an interactive experience and the other a large mural.

Everyone will also be encouraged to prioritize community-articulated challenges and special Pasadena qualities as part of an interactive exhibit displayed on six-foot panels.

Books of drawings and opinions assembled by local teenagers who have been actively involved in the General Plan update will be available for viewing at the open house, and the teens will provide their input throughout the afternoon.

Child care will be provided at no cost. Children 5 and older will work on their own creative activities supervised by Sidestreet Projects.

In addition to free food that will be available at the event, the Lemonade Brigade – run by local teens – will have goodies on hand at discounted prices.

Look for free parking at the Corporate Center on the west side of South Lake Avenue between Cordova Street and Del Mar Boulevard, or take the Metro Gold Line to the Lake Avenue Station and hop a Pasadena ARTS bus or Metro bus heading south.

The second phase of the General Plan update will begin in 2010 when stated priorities will be fine-tuned, and alternatives and tradeoffs for bringing the community’s ideas to life will be discussed. Later, a draft a General Plan will be prepared for presentation to the community, city advisory commissions and the Pasadena City Council.
