Closing reception for Larry Hilman at One Colorado in Pasadena April 29

One Colorado hosts the closing reception, Multiple Exposures, for Artist in Residence Larry Hilman on Thursday, April 29, 2010 from 6:00pm to 10:00pm.

Using Pasadena cityscapes from the studio’s surrounding as his muse, Hilman layers his compositions to unfold the image of their own history. His characteristic use of contrast and form are further defined by additional layers of paint that give depth to each piece. As a special collection, a visual diary of self portraits completed during his last days at the One Colorado space will also be presented.

About Larry Hilman

After three years of college in the late 1980's Larry Hilman realized that he wouldn't be satisfied if he was not painting. Hilman earned a degree in printmaking and painting after spending a year in Taiwan and travelling main land China studying Chinese calligraphy. He continues to be drawn to the brush strokes that makeup the profound traditional art form. After opening a studio/gallery in San Diego called "The Man Who Thought He Could Draw" in 1993, Hilman retreated to Joshua Tree to raise a family and develop his painting in solitude.

Hilman has resisted a singular painting methodology for over twenty years. What does characterize his work are physical-intuitive marks, contrast, form, color and his range from the sensitive to raw and the personal to detached. “Imagery has not always been extremely important as content but more about composing figures as architectural devises and vice versa” says Hilman. The results are very much personal and yet modernly disconnected.
