Border Radio at the Coffee Gallery Backstage Oct. 2

Kelly McCune and her Americana string band, Border Radio, return to the Coffee Gallery Backstage for a Saturday evening concert on October 2nd. The Coffee Gallery Backstage is Bob Stane’s nationally known folk and Americana music venue in Altadena. He was recently celebrated with the well-loved “Fork in the Road” at the intersections of St. John and Pasadena Avenues in Pasadena. Bob and Kelly have been friends for a decade, and it was Bob who can be credited with giving them their first stage appearance.

In October Border Radio heads up to Santa Clara for the annual Folk Alliance regional conference, a gathering of musicians, presenters, vendors and promoters of folk and Americana music. At the conference, presenters have the opportunity to hear a large number of performers under one roof – in this case the roof is the Hyatt Regency Santa Clara. For two nights regular hotel rooms become ad hoc performance spaces where beds are upturned and twinkle lights hung to attract potential listeners. From 10:30 p.m. to 2:30 a.m. “Guerrilla Showcases” present acts every 30 minutes, as presenters roam the halls and stop in to hear someone that appeals. During the day the conference looks like any other, with an exhibit hall and awards luncheon, but at night one section of the hotel is like a club street in Austin. Border Radio will play 4 of these showcases, including one at 1 a.m.!

A well-known favorite on the local concert scene, Border Radio has played the Autry Heritage Center, the Topanga Festival, Descanso Gardens, and Pershing Square. Kelly has been a New Folk Finalist at the Kerrville, TX, Folk Festival and showcased at SxSW.

Border Radio plays at the Coffee Gallery on Saturday, October 2 at 7:00 p.m. Tickets are $18, and are available by calling (626) 794-2424 for reservations. The address of the Coffee Gallery Backstage is 2029 N. Lake Avenue in Altadena, and their website is http://www.coffeegallery.com/.
