Memorabilia related to the life and legacy of legendary Pasadena boxer/boxing manager Canto “TNT” Robledo (1913-1999) is on view through Thursday, September 30, in the North Entry of Pasadena Central Library, 285 E. Walnut St., Pasadena 91101. This exhibition is presented by Pasadena Museum of History in conjunction with its Family Stories Initiative, which was inaugurated in 2009 to research, document and spotlight the diverse peoples and cultures that have contributed to the development of Pasadena and the West San Gabriel Valley.

Canto Robledo was the Pacific Coast Bantamweight Boxing Champion from 1931-1932. Tragically, at the age of 20, he lost his eye sight due to injuries suffered in the ring. Though blind, Canto went on to start the Crown City Boxing Stables in Pasadena, where he successfully trained and managed many championship boxers. He was the first blind manager and trainer to hold a professional license in the sport of boxing. He also taught countless youth from the community about the art of boxing. His students learned sportsmanship, discipline, and the value of a strong work ethic.

In 1988 Canto was inducted into the World Boxing Hall of Fame for his humanitarian accomplishments, and in 2005 he was inducted into the California Boxing Hall of Fame. A statue honoring Canto Robledo was unveiled in Pasadena’s Villa Parke in July of this year.

Canto was married to Concha Jimenez Robledo for over 50 years and they raised four children. All items on display at the Library are on loan from the Robledo and Jimenez families. This satellite exhibition was curated by PMH’s Brad Macneil and Jeannette Bovard in collaboration with Joe Robledo, Canto’s son, and installed by Eduardo Consuegra of PMH.
