CicLAvia festival/event in LA Oct. 10

CicLAvia, Los Angeles' new public space, will take place on October 10 2010. By removing car traffic from select streets CicLAvia will open streets to bicycling and walking for people of all ages and abilities. Modeled after the decades old ciclovías in Bogotá, Colombia and other similar car free events from New York's Summer Streets to San Francisco's Sunday Streets, CicLAvia will create over 45 acres of temporary park space where Angelinos can play, explore, exercise and more.

CicLAvia is a partnership between the recently formed non-profit organization CicLAvia, which has raised over $70,000.00 to bring the initiative to the city, and the City of Los Angeles, under the leadership of Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa. The event has the full support of the city's Police Department, Department of Transportation, as well as the Fire Department and the Department of Public Works playing smaller but critical roles. Other partners include: the Los Angeles County Bicycle Coalition, Los Angeles Conservation Corps, Green L.A. Coalition, C.I.C.L.E., the Bicycle Kitchen and GOOD Media.

The route will stretch over seven miles through the most densely populated areas of Los Angeles. It extends from Boyle Heights, through Downtown and MacArthur Park, and all the way to East Hollywood. Participation in CicLAvia is free, and open to all. Parents, families and all ages are welcome.

CicLAvia is not just about bikes - participants can walk, bike, skateboard, skate, run, dance, explore, hang out, walk dogs, or come up with your own exciting activities. There will be local restaurants, food trucks, musicians, kids' rides, and more.

In 2010, Los Angeles will host one CicLAvia event, with plans to expand to multiple recurring events in different neighborhoods in 2011. CicLAvia is seeking volunteers, sponsors, media partners, and tax-deductible donations.
