LA Academy of Performing Arts offers kids camps starting June 25

The Los Angeles Academy of Performing Arts (LAAPA) will be offering a series of 2012 Summer Performance Camps for kids and teenagers. The camps will be held in the following disciplines: Shakespeare, Opera, and Musical Theatre

When: Shakespeare (ages 7 and up): June 25 -29
Opera (ages 7 and up): June 25-29
Musical Theatre (ages 7-12): July 9-13; 16-20
Musical Theatre (ages 13-18): July 23-27; 30-August 3

Camp hours are 10:00 AM – 3:00PM daily

Where: The Complex Theatres

Hollywood, CA 90038

Who: The Shakespeare camp will be taught by professional actor and Founding Academy Director, John Staley. John has been teaching acting and Shakespeare for over a decade to children and adults, beginners to professionals. He holds an MFA in Acting from the University of California, San Diego graduate theatre program, where, in addition to teaching acting and public speaking, he was an Artsbridge Scholar, introducing theatre to schools in the San Diego area. John was on faculty at the Actors Workshop Studios in San Diego where he taught intermediate and professional level classes to teens and adults.

The Musical Theatre and Opera camps will be taught by Thomas Shepard. Among Thomas’ long-standing professional teaching associations are scholastic institutions such at New York University, Columbia University, The American Academy of Dramatic Arts, and The American Musical and Dramatic Academy NYC and Los Angeles. He was also the musical director for The Lion King Broadway Master Classes. Thomas holds Masters Degrees in Opera and Musical Theatre from Southern Illinois University. He currently serves on the Board of Directors for the LA Opera.

Why: At LAAPA, we believe that cultivating all areas of the performing arts is important to each student’s development as an artist and a person. To that end, we offer year-round conservatory training to children and teens, as well as open classes to adults.

Cost: Tuition varies depending on length of camps.
Shakespeare (one-week): $400
Opera: (one-week): $400
Musical Theatre (two-weeks) $750


About The Los Angeles Academy of Performing Arts
The Los Angeles Academy of Performing Arts is a year-round conservatory that offers pre-professional training in drama, dance, and music to students ages seven through eighteen. At LAAPA we take an interdisciplinary approach to our training. Students will be exposed to a curriculum that includes Shakespeare, Musical Theatre, Dancing, Singing, and Guitar, all the while learning the important life skills required to work successfully within a group environment.
