Nicholas McGegan returns to Pasadena Symphony

Conductor Nicholas McGegan, celebrated for his Baroque and Classical interpretations, applies his masterful historical insights to Mahler'sSymphony No. 4 with the Pasadena Symphony - a first for this two-time Grammy nominee - on Saturday, February 9 at Ambassador Auditorium. The concert will also showcase the virtuosic talents of Pasadena Symphony's own Principal Clarinetist Donald Foster performing Mozart's playful Clarinet Concerto, and Russian-American soprano Yulia Van Doren will join the orchestra or Mahler's Symphony No. 4.

McGegan conducted the Pasadena Symphony last season in a performance of Beethoven's towering Symphony No. 3. The Los Angeles Times raved that his appearance had "...exciting forward motion," and that his "rendition was perfectly paced and weighted, from the score’s two famously abrupt opening chords to its finish 45 minutes later." McGegan serves as Music Director of San Francisco's acclaimed Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra and regularly appears with major orchestras through the world, including Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Los Angeles, New York, Philadelphia, San Francisco, Göteborg Symphony Orchestra, and Amsterdam's Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra.

Donald Foster is one of Southern California's most celebrated clarinetists, serving as Principal Clarinet with both the Pasadena Symphony and Santa Barbara Symphony, and appearing regularly with the Los Angeles Philharmonic and Opera orchestras. Foster is active in the movie and television studios as well, and can be heard in movies ranging from Disney'sTangled and Pixar's Toy Story 3 to ABC's No Ordinary Family. This performance marks his debut as a soloist with the Pasadena Symphony.

Soprano Yulia Van Doren was recently hailed by Opera magazine as having a "spring-water timbre, expert decoration and fabulous staccatos, and a telling way with text." She and Maestro McGegan routinely work together, performing on tour as well as with McGegan's Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra.

McGegan Conducts Mahler is the fourth concert in the Pasadena Symphony’s 2012-13 Singpoli Classics Series at Ambassador Auditorium.
