Mutlu to guest on Daryl Hall's webcast

Daryl Hall continues to break through genre and stylistic boundaries on his free webcast, Live From Daryl’s House, with the seventh and latest edition, recorded during his acclaimed series of performances at the March SXSW convention in Austin, TX, debuting on May 15 at 8 p.m., featuring Philly R&B singer Mutlu and veteran indie rocker Chuck Prophet.

The performance can be seen exclusively at www.livefromdarylshouse.com.

What started as a “light bulb” moment experienced by Daryl Hall has turned into a viral sensation, with the superstar “playing music with my friends and putting it up on the Internet.” As he told Rolling Stone in a recent feature on Live From Daryl’s House, which it called “totally awesome”: “This is just a way to see my environment. It’s a state of mind, you know?”

Mutlu is a soul singer from Daryl’s hometown of Philadelphia with many of the same influences, including Curtis Mayfield, the Isley Brothers, the Staples Singers, Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder and Bill Withers. The two can be seen performing a dynamic reggae version of “Maneater” at SXSW. He is currently on tour with the Joe Jackson Band and is featured on the WXPN Philly Local Volume 2 compilation.

Daryl performs a rocking version of “You Make My Dreams Come True” with San Francisco-based musician Chuck Prophet, the former guitarist for country-punk pioneers Green on Red, who has carved out an impressive, critically acclaimed career as a solo artist, with eight albums. Entertainment Weekly called his most recent Yep Roc release, Soap and Water, “elegantly and acerbically wasted… Stonesy loose and Stonesy tight.” His songs have been covered by Solomon Burke, Heart, Kim Carnes, Peter Wolf, Kim Richey, Kelly Willis and Jim Dickinson, among others. This segment was also filmed at SXSW.

Variety’s Phil Gallo marveled about his SXSW appearance: “His songs sound fresh and modern; the 10-song concert thoroughly drove home that point.”

Previous versions of Live From Daryl’s House have included appearances by U.K. singer-songwriter KT Tunstall and Gym Class Heroes’ Travis McCoy, a longtime Hall fan, as well as a holiday special featuring songs from the Daryl Hall and John Oates release, Home for Christmas, and, last month, a webcast of Daryl’s acclaimed solo show at Austin Convention Center performing a number of his classics. All are still available for viewing at the website.

That performance will be broadcast later this month on DirecTV in high definition digital.

Live from Daryl’s House has taken place at Hall’s residences in New York and London, with upcoming versions slated for his other homes in New England and the Bahamas.

“These collaborations have really reinvigorated my music, both as a solo artist and the stuff I do with John and the band,” says Daryl. “It’s like getting a new lease on life. And the response has been overwhelming.”

Daryl Hall and John Oates will return to L.A.’s famed Troubadour for the first time in 35 years for a pair of special, intimate concerts on May 22-23. Limited tickets are available for $200 apiece at Ticketmaster.com.

Just two days before that, Daryl and John will be honored as BMI Icons, when the best-selling pop-rock duo of all time are saluted with a musical tribute at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel in L.A. on May 20.
