Congregation Shaarei Torah, a center for Jewish worship, education, and community activities for the San Gabriel and Pomona Valleys, today announces that master jazz musician and comedian, David Zasloff, is appearing at the synagogue on September 27, 2008, at 7:00 PM. The evening includes David’s shofar concert and workshop, presented with David’s blend of hilarious comedy and story-telling.
"David’s concert opens our series of events created as part of Shaarei Torah’s revitalization and renewal initiative designed to welcome the greater Jewish community in the eastern valleys of Los Angeles," comments President Larry Horowitz.
"What a perfect beginning -- sounding the shofar we hear each year to invite everyone to celebrate with us." Rabbi Michael Barclay adds, "There is something for everyone – young and old – at Shaarei Torah this holiday season. Anyone who wants more joy and spirituality can find it here."
The shofar is the ram’s horn traditionally blown the month prior to and during the Jewish High Holy Days of Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. The sounding of the shofar is intended to wake-up the soul and to call the community to worship. During the workshop portion, David explains how to choose the best shofar to suit each person’s needs and how to play a shofar, including the shofar calls for the High Holy Days, advanced musical techniques and unique shofar sounds. Those attending are encouraged to bring their own shofar to participate.
David plays the shofar like a musical instrument. His concert includes traditional Jewish songs such as Kol Nidre, Hatikvah and Draydl along with the classics, Summertime and Flight of the Bumble Bee. He even takes requests from the audience!
