Singer invites people to share sewing stories

To help commemorate the brand’s 160th anniversary, SINGER® invites people to learn historic information about their vintage or antique sewing machines and share their own stories about SINGER® and sewing. The story sharing is available at http://www.mysingerstory.com/ , a new website celebrating the brand’s deep heritage in history and culture.

SINGER® will also unveil a limited edition SINGER® 160th anniversary commemorative sewing machine that mirrors machine designs of the past, while offering current, easy-to-use features, available for purchase in January 2012.

“Since the introduction of the world’s first practical sewing machine 160 years ago, the SINGER® brand has brought the craft of sewing to millions of people across the globe,” said Katrina Helmkamp, CEO of SVP Worldwide, producer of the SINGER® products. “People are deeply attached to their machines and the memories they evoke. Through the mySINGERstory website, we are sharing information about each unique machine while learning more about those for whom sewing is part of a family legacy.”

mySINGERstory.com offers a platform for consumers to search the history of their personal SINGER® household sewing machines and learn the year it was issued and interesting historical facts about sewing from that era. SINGER® will issue an acknowledgement certificate to those who utilize this historical feature, which sewers can share via Facebook or print out for display in their sewing room and/or home. On the website, individuals can also share their unique SINGER® story and view other sewers’ stories and experiences about SINGER® machines throughout history.

“For the past 160 years, SINGER® has held special memories in the minds of millions of both sewers and non-sewers worldwide,” said Helmkamp. “We hope that this website will give consumers the opportunity to better understand and appreciate their own sewing history, as well as the history of the SINGER® brand, as we continue to forge new and exciting paths for the many more generations of sewers to come.”

Through December, each person who submits a story on mySINGERstory.com will have a chance to win one of the first commemorative edition sewing machines to hit the market in January 2012. This technologically advanced machine will boast innovative features, yet its design and appearance will harken back to the iconic SINGER® machines of years past. The antique-inspired machine is Singer Sewing Company’s tribute to the brand’s rich history and an opportunity to introduce the modern innovations of sewing to the next generation of sewers everywhere.

On August 12, 2011, the SINGER® brand officially begins celebrating its 160th anniversary, as marked by the issued patent of the first SINGER® sewing machine by Isaac Merritt Singer on August 12, 1851. Known as the “Gateway to Sewing,” the SINGER® brand is synonymous with “sewing made easy.” Its machines emphasize easy, automatic features such as easy threading, bobbin changing and stitch selection. The brand also focuses on jumpstarting beginners by providing quick start guides and DVDs that detail basic sewing skills. For 160 years, the SINGER® brand has made sewing more accessible to all skill levels, by offering lower priced, high quality machines that are easy to learn and operate.

SINGER®’s celebration will continue through August 2012.
