Descanso Gardens to hold Labor Day bash

Give summer a rousing send-off at Descanso Gardens' annual Labor Day bash on Monday, September 5. Inspired by the legendary parties that Descanso owner E. Manchester Boddy hosted in the 1930s and ’40s, Boddy’s Big Backyard brings together toe-tapping live music, hearty chow, and garden activities for young and old. Activities are free with admission.

Start the day with a walk through the California Natives Garden with Native Plants Horticulturist Rachel Young at 10 a.m. Meet at the Center Circle. Children and families will enjoy the “Teddy Bears’ Picnic” story time at the Rose Pavilion at 10:30 and 11:30 a.m., followed by crafts and an enchanting walk in the Gardens. Great for toddlers!

Kick out the jams with American rock and bluegrass performed by the Mobile Homeboys at the Under the Oaks Theater at noon. Bring a picnic basket or enjoy gourmet barbecue from Patina Restaurant Group on the Main Lawn from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Descanso Gardens is located at 1418 Descanso Drive, La CaƱada Flintridge. Admission is $8 adults, $6 seniors and students, $3 children 5 to 12, free for children 4 and younger. Information: (818) 949-4200. www.descansogardens.org
