Sculptor Mineko Grimmer and violinist Shalini Vijayan open Cage 2012, presented by Grammy Award-winning Southwest Chamber Music. From March 3 through March 24 Southwest celebrates the centennial of composer John Cage at various locations in Los Angeles and Pasadena.
Sculptor Mineko Grimmer collaborated with John Cage
Mineko Grimmer and John Cage developed an artistic partnership, creating two works, One-6 and One-10 which are duets between the violin and her audio-kinetic sculpture. These works, featuring Southwest violinist Shalini Vijayan, will be performed March 3
at 8 p.m. and repeated March 4 at 5 p.m. at the Japanese American National Museum in Little Toyko, downtown. Grimmer and Cage first presented One-6 in live performance at UCSD in 1991. One-10 premiered in 1993, and the two works have not been performed since 1993 at MOCA. Mineko Grimmer will be present at these performances.
The sculpture itself is of wood, bamboo and piano strings for One-6, and a bronze bar is added for One-10. The sculpture is a part of Grimmer's dynamic performance installations and reflects Grimmer's lifelong interest in the natural world and aleatoric music. The sculpture will be on view only during the performances March 3 and 4.
Southwest continues its collaboration with the art world in two more festival programs.
On March 10, in the Williamson Gallery at Art Center College of Design, Cage's Atlas Eclipticalis, Variations IV, and 4'33" (no. 2) (0'00") will be performed in spatial constellations by Southwest Chamber Music and Hamilton Academy of Music students within the Gallery's exhibit "The History of Space Photography," curated by Jay Belloli. The exhibit premieres in the Williamson Gallery at Art Center College of Design Friday, March 9, 2012, where it will be on view through May 6. The exhibition presents the extraordinary variety of astronomical photographs that have been created since the development of the photography in the early 19th century through some of the most recent images received from space. The exhibition includes photographs of the Earth from space, the solar system, and the universe beyond.
On March 11 the Pacific Asia Museum will offer to Cage 2012 festival patrons a view of their exhibit "46 N. Los Robles: A History of the Pasadena Art Museum." The exhibition will present more than 40 important modern and contemporary works shown at the Pasadena Art Museum, predecessor of The Pacific Asia Museum at that address, in its groundbreaking exhibitions, including paintings, sculpture, prints, drawings, and documentation of performances. The concert explores the nature of percussion with found objects, radios, stones and other instruments in works by John Cage including Branches, Music for Carillon No. 8, Radio Music, and Etudes Boreales.
The final festival concert takes place in Zipper Hall at the Colburn School on March 24 at
8 p.m. and involves prominent personalities in the arts performing Cage's Lecture on the Weather (with film) and Score based on the writings and drawings of Thoreau.
