Fiestas Patrias 2009, which celebrates the freedom of nine Latin American countries from colonial rule, will be at Villa-Parke Community Center in Pasadena on Saturday, Sept. 19, from noon to 5 p.m.
Sponsored by the city of Pasadena and KFI Radio 640 AM, the family festival will feature live music, dance performances, children’s activities and a soccer tournament. Vice Mayor Victor Gordo will welcome participants and crown the new Queen.
Countries celebrating their independence are Belize, Brazil, Chile, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Honduras, Guatemala, Mexico and Nicaragua.
Starting at noon, Aztec Dancers from Villa-Parke will take the stage, followed by Mariachis and Ballet Folklorico and ending with Tierra Blanca Dance Company, which will perform traditional dances and costumes from four countries.
A soccer tournament among Villa-Parke teams and invited guests will take place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
A representative from the Consul General of Mexico is scheduled to appear.
Exhibitors from various city departments will provide giveaways and information on services.
