Justin Currie, the former lead singer of Scottish pop-rock band Del Amitri, has announced a series of dates for his acoustic U.S. tour beginning in June in support of his upcoming Ryko release and second solo album, The Great War, out May 4, 2010. The release follows on the heels of his 2007 critically acclaimed solo debut, What Is Love For, a showcase of superb songcraft and somber brilliance. Currie returns on The Great War with a twist of haunting and mysterious lyrics combined with infectious melodies. His ever-present genius for combining dark, moody lyrical themes balanced with newfound optimism is heard throughout The Great War.
"If I have a mission as an artist," says Currie, "it would be to get a little more poetry into the great warehouse of rock music. All I can do is get it out there and fight to be heard; that's the great war."
Much anticipated by Justin Currie and Del Amitri fans alike, The Great War captures Currie’s bittersweet signature sound—gorgeous vocals set against unforgettable self-revelation—the work of a master tunesmith. Unfailingly, he continues to break new ground throughout the set with gems like lead single, “A Man With Nothing To Do,” as well as others, such as, “Ready To Be,” "The Way That It Falls,” "At Home Inside of Me" and the epic "The Fight to Be Human." The album’s evocative songs only reinforce Currie’s career as an established solo singer-songwriter.
Justin Currie was still in his teens when he co-founded Del Amitri in his hometown of Glasgow. Between 1982 and 2002, the band evolved from resourceful D.I.Y. indie combo to international hitmakers, releasing six much-loved studio albums before amicably parting ways. In 2007, Currie released his first solo debut What Is Love For on Ryko. The release grabbed the attention of critics worldwide earning him an appearance on Sundance’s Live From Abbey Road and the #1 Album of Year by Jim Farber at The New York Daily News.
PopMatters raved about his Live From Abbey Road Sundance Channel performance, stating that it “showcases not only Currie’s ability to write a stunner, but his talent for elevating a great song even further on the strength of his voice. You can just imagine what the room gave back to him.”
Currie’s live performance set is not to be missed.
