Saturdays Off the 405 is back again this month with a new mix of free outdoor performances by lively bands, along with DJ sets to open and close the night. Once again this year, there will be free spotlight talks that offer mini-tours of the galleries throughout the evening.
Starting off the new series on May 7 is Long Beach-based indie-pop band Avi Buffalo. The band started out with just a kid named Avi Buffalo. Years of 12-hour days attacking the guitar, getting lessons from iconoclastic local blues musicians and learning to record on his laptop revealed a natural talent for creating bent but lovely pop songs.
After a solo show at a vegan restaurant in Long Beach, Avi Buffalo became a full band and eventually got the attention of Sub Pop Records. They signed their record deal around the same time they were graduating from high school. Rounding out the evening, DJ Kevin Bronson of BuzzBandsLA, known for tipping readers to myriad unsigned artists, will spin a mix of local indie bands and summer party music.
On June 18, Dengue Fever, whose exotic blend of Cambodian rock, Afro grooves, surf, and garage psych returns to the Getty with songs from their newest release, Cannibal Courtship. Featuring songs sung in English, and Khmer (Cambodian), the band’s unique take on 60s Cambodian pop and American surf rock has garnered praise and attention from fans and critics alike. Deftly balancing the wide-ranging influences that inform their sound, Chhom Nimol’s haunting vocals and the band’s spooky, kinetic, mood-swinging sound are, like the tropical malady that gave the band its name, wildly infectious. Also performing that evening is DJ Mahssa, part of the B-Music/Finders Keepers collective and founder of the LA-based Cureation parties, who will be spinning psychedelia, fuzz, funk and rock from around the world.
Admission is free, and so is parking after 5pm. The Museum remains open until 9pm, creating an opportunity to enjoy art, music, a no-host bar, and one of the most spectacular views in Los Angeles as the sun sets.

All performances take place in the Museum Courtyard from 6:00 – 9:00 p.m. A cash bar will be available with Getty-tinis and more, and the Garden Terrace Cafe will offer sandwiches, salads, and other snacks (both until 8:30 p.m.)

Visiting the Getty Center
The Getty Center is open Tuesday through Friday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. It is closed Monday and major holidays.
