PBS and 48 Hour Film Project screening in Encino Aug. 16-18

In an effort to raise awareness of the plethora of talented independent filmmakers in the Los Angeles area, PBS SoCal is teaming up with the 48 Hour Film Project for the 11th anniversary of the world’s largest timed international filmmaking competition.

The 48-Hour Film Project requires teams to race against the clock and each other and complete the writing, filming, editing and scoring of their film short in 48 hours or less. The competition begins regionally in 100 cities worldwide, including Los Angeles, with regional winners qualifying for the cash prize and Cannes Film Festival screening that are the highlights of the overall competition.

This year’s Los Angeles two-day competition begins Friday, Aug. 5, at Dim Mak Studios (6356 Hollywood Blvd, formerly Cinespace) where filmmakers from around Southern California will gather to learn the three randomly selected elements (character, prop and line of dialogue) that are required to be included in their final film entry.

As part of its sponsorship agreement with the 48 Hours Film Project, PBS SoCal will be providing each team captain with his/her own USB drive to use in the small 48-hour window to help transfer data and information that will be needed to put films together as quickly as possible. A long time supporter of independent films, PBS SoCal also will produce promotional spots to support the screenings.

Additionally, Jasmine Bulin, PBS SoCal senior manager of interactive, will join a distinguished panel of judges for the Los Angeles competition. “It will be exciting to see what the L.A. filmmaking teams come up with this year,” says Bulin, “and I’m excited for the challenge to engage with local filmmakers and producers on new online storytelling opportunities.”

The 48-Hour Film Project is in its 11th year and has quickly grown into a worldwide phenomenon. This year the competition began in Nijmegan, Netherlands in March and winds through 100 cities culminating in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam in November, 2011. During that time, each winner of the local filmmaker competition is elevated to a subsequent round of competition where ultimately a winner is chosen and is screened at the Short Film Corner at the Cannes Film Festival in May 2012.

The Los Angeles community is invited to see the “Premiere Screening” films competing in this years’ competition on August 16, 17 and 18 at 7 p.m. and 9:30 p.m., at Laemmle's Town Center, 17200 Ventura Blvd, Encino. For more information visit: www.48hourfilm.com/la
