Auralex Acoustics gives Camp Sincha recording studio

Auralex® Acoustics, Inc., the industry leader in innovative sound control solutions, made a generous contribution to Camp Simcha, a summer camp for children and teens with cancer and other life-threatening illnesses, serious chronic conditions or disabilities, located in Glen Spey, NY. The camp recently built a recording workshop in an unused cabin and Auralex donated several of its acoustic products to outfit the new studio space.

For 26 years, Camp Simcha has been providing a fun and supportive summer camp experience for seriously ill children. The upstate NY camp features a myriad of activities, including team sports, water activities at a nearby lake or the camp’s pool, arts and crafts, barbecues, cooking, helicopter rides and trips.

As part of her research to build the recording studio, Camp Simcha program director Shaindy Lowenthal reached out to Auralex. “They were so helpful throughout the entire process. They listened, and told us what they thought we would need. We hoped for a discount, but they donated the entire purchase order.”

The camp’s recording studio is now equipped with Auralex’s 2” StudioFoam® Wedgies®, MoPAD™ Isolation Pads, a Deluxe Plus™ Roominator Kit, LENRD® Bass Traps, T’Fusor™ Sound Diffusors, TubeTak Pro™ Liquid Foam Insulation and several MudGuard™ microphone isolators.

“The StudioFoam we installed really helps,” continued Lowenthal. “The ‘shack,’ as we like to call it, is like a linen closet. It’s on the corner of the road where there are golf carts that pass by and there’s a lot of traffic around there. We put some insulation on the walls, but the Auralex treatments help isolate the space and make the room visually look like a recording studio.”

The recording studio serves two purposes. The camp uses it as a recording workshop for everyday musical activities. The camp also creates an end-of-the-summer CD of the season’s “in songs” for the kids to take home.

What began as a way to preserve summer camp memories and enhance certain activities blossomed into an introduction to working in a recording studio. Lowenthal explained that the camp takes music production seriously. “We try to hire somebody with a background in recording and music. When children show an interest, we are more than happy for them to learn some of the techniques.”

The recording studio setup includes an Avid Command 8, Pro Tools, Profire 2626 Interface, M-Audio Axiom 48 MIDI Controller, M-Audio Studio Monitors, AKG K240S semi-open monitor headphones, AKG K77 closed stereo headphones, a matched pair of Rode NT1AMP condenser mic headphones and Antares Auto-Tune 7 Native.

Camp Simcha is already looking forward to next year’s summer program and is excited to once again be a part of the kid’s musical performances and memories in 2012 and beyond.
