Jerry Burgan coming to Altadena March 2

Jerry Burgan ~ Songs & Stories with Debbie Burgan & Tholow Chan
Where: Coffee Gallery Backstage, Altadena CA
When: Friday March 2, 2012 8:00 PM

In the late 1950s and early '60s, folk music emerged from the coffee houses and morphed into folk-rock influencing everyone from the Beatles and the Beach Boys, to Bob Dylan-- and all the hyphen-rock forms that followed. Jerry Burgan, was there on the leading edge touring college campuses in We Five with classic their hits You Were On My Mind and Get Together.

Today, his Songs & Stories show brings the audience along on a return visit to our folk roots as he leads a guided tour through some of the magical and memorable moments of our common musical experience—when folk songs topped the charts and Dylan still hadn’t plugged in—but the times were indeed a changing.

Joined on stage by his wife Debbie (We Five’s lead singer) and bassist Tholow Chan, they create a totally engaging and entertaining show that has the audience participating from the first song. Whether you were there at the start, sang the songs in school, or learned them from your parents, the familiar tunes are sure to connect as synapses begin to fire. Feet will tap in time with the music and lips spread into a broad smile as they follow along moving in synchronicity with the lyrics.

Between songs, Jerry takes the role of wizened sage, sharing fascinating tales woven from the spirit of Woody Guthrie, the Lomaxes, Leadbelly, Pete Seeger and the Weavers, to the more contemporary artists they inspired – like John Stewart. The former Kingston Trio banjo player and writer of countless classic songs in the musical form that’s now come to be called Americana, was Jerry’s mentor, so count on hearing some treasures that were learned directly from the master.

Some originals from his first solo Global Recording Artists CD, Jerry Burgan – Reflections, Songs & Stories, are always included, along with few surprises. It’s all tastily complimented by bassist and humorist, Tholow Chan, and singer/percussionist extraordinaire, Debbie Burgan. Their stage rapport has a seamless quality that’s been honed by time as they draw each audience into the feel-good experience--often with spontaneous laughter and comments coming from the room. When the three of them sing together, their tight arrangements bring to life the exhilarating power, harmony and charm that made folk trios so popular.

Bring your friends along. They’ll thank you.
