Descanso Gardens invites you to spend the summer

Summer is just a few weeks away. Descanso Gardens is gearing up for the season with 10 weeks of extended summer hours, including jazz concerts, family programs and the return of the Camellia Lounge. Here is a quick look at what the summer holds for Descanso visitors.:

CAMELLIA LOUNGE
June 20 - August 22 | 3 - 7:45pm | Tuesday - Wednesday - Thursday
The Camellia Lounge returns to the Full Moon Tea House for its fourth season during extended summer hours. Purchase signature cocktails, savory small plates of appetizers, snacks and beverages. Unwind and savor the flavors of summer.

MIDWEEK EXTENDED SUMMER HOURS
June 20 - August 22 | 9 am - 8pm | Tuesday - Wednesday - Thursday
For 10 weeks this summer, Descanso will keep its doors open late on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. Enjoy family programs, jazz concerts or a walk under the oaks as the sun sets. Members enter free; regular admission for nonmembers. No reciprocal gardens admissions.

MUSIC ON THE MAIN SUMMER JAZZ
Thursdays, June 20 - August 22 | 6 - 7:30pm | Main Lawn
Add this to your list of mid-week musts! Relax on the lawn with a picnic and enjoy live music headlined by some of the coolest jazz artists around! Free with admission. Lawn seating is first-come, first-served. No reciprocal gardens admissions.

FAMILY TUESDAYS
June 25 - July 30 | 6 - 7:30pm | Main Lawn
Bring the family out for an evening picnic and kid-friendly entertainment, including concerts, theater and an Elizabethan festival. Free with admission. Lawn seating is first-come, first-served. No reciprocal gardens admissions.
    


Music on the Main Summer Jazz Schedule
Thursdays, June 20 - August 22 | 6pm | Main Lawn

A loaf of bread, a jug of wine, and wow! Enjoy 10 evenings of live music presented by some of the coolest jazz artists in the Southland. Bring a picnic, lawn chairs and some friends for a wonderful evening under the Descanso oaks. Concerts are free with admission. Lawn seating is first-come, first-served. No reciprocal gardens admissions.

June 20 | Josh Nelson
This pianist is a highly respected artist who is also Natalie Cole's accompanist. His concert at the Blue Whale was #2 on a list of the 2012 Top LA Jazz Concerts in LA Weekly.

June 27 | Robert Kyle Brazilian Band
Kyle has become known for his unique warm sound, melodic style, and his ability to harmoniously cross musical borders. He is a returning favorite.

July 4 | Graham Dechter
Guitarist, composer and arranger Dechter's sophomore release, "Takin' It There," climbed to #1 on the JazzWeek charts in 2012.

July 11 | Scott Martin
Enjoy Latin soul jazz performed by this saxophone player who has worked with Poncho Sanchez.

July 18 | Aubrey Logan
A singer, trombonist, and songwriter, Logan is the winner of the Jazz Voice Competition at the Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland. She is currently recording her debut album, produced by Patrice Rushen.

July 25 | Bossa Zuzu
This fresh young group lead by Dan Reckard is making a name for itself performing Brazilian jazz - a returning favorite from last season.

August 1 | Nolan Shaheed
A top studio musician, Shaheed has worked with Marvin Gaye, Count Basie, Natalie Cole, Stevie Wonder, Phil Collins, Anita Baker, Carole King, Tom Waits and Freddie Hubbard.

August 8 | Sammy Miller
At the ripe old age of 21, Sammy has performed with Wynton Marsalis, Christian Scott, Bobby Watson, David Benoit, and Ozomotli. He is pursuing his masters degree at The Juilliard School in New York.

August 15 | Kristin Korb
Bassist/vocalist Kristin Korb tours internationally as a performer, clinician, and guest artist with numerous jazz ensembles. Now based in Denmark, her Descanso return is eagerly anticipated by local fans.

August 22 | Betty Bryant
A sensation last season, this jazz great closes out the summer series. "Bryant's steady, rolling, soulful musical sprees are always textured with ideal measures of torchy passion, elegantly whimsical good humor and a trace of Kansas City's uncut and communicative blues sensibility," the LA Weekly reported.


Family Tuesdays Schedule | Summer 2013
June 25 - July 30 | 6pm | Main Lawn

Chill out with the family for six Tuesday evenings. Enjoy kid-friendly concerts, live theater and an Elizabethan festival. Bring a picnic and be ready for fun! And don't miss the fabulous kickoff concert with rockin' Melissa Green (Family Plus level and higher only). Family Tuesday programs are free with admission. Lawn seating is first-come, first-served. No reciprocal gardens admissions.

June 18 | Melissa Green
Get a taste of the Family Tuesday Series with a preview concert by award-winner Melissa Green. This singer-guitarist gets audiences rockin' with her lively mix. An invitation event for Family Plus and higher level members only.

June 25 | A Faery Hunt Theatre
If you believe in fairies, don't miss this interactive experience with the popular Los Angeles theatrical troupe. Stories, songs, games and a whole lot of fairy magic for youngsters and the young at heart.

July 2| Rhythm Child
Get your groove on with this interactive band. Got a tambourine or bongos? Bring 'em along!

July 9 | "The Taming of the Shrew" with Will Geer's Theatricum Botanicum
Wily Petruchio woos waspish Kate in the classic Shakespeare comedy sure to win young fans.
July 16 | Lucky Diaz and the Family Jam Band
Dubbed "indie pop-rock for seriously groovin' families," this LA band draws raves from coast-to-coast.

July 23 | The SqueeGees
Meet the SqueeGees, who mesh positive themes with irresistible music.
July 30 | Elizabethan Festival with Will Geer's Theatricum Botanicum
All the world's a stage at this interactive evening of music, dancing and games.  

About Descanso Gardens:
Established as a public garden in 1953, Descanso Gardens is located at 1418 Descanso Drive, La CaƱada Flintridge 91011. The Gardens are open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily except Christmas Day. Admission is $8 adults, $6 seniors and students with ID, $3 children 5 to 12, free for 4 and younger. Descanso Gardens is accredited by the American Association of Museums.
