When Omniverse Vision and Fathom Events release Mariinsky Live 3D Swan Lake on 75 select screens across the U.S. on Thursday, June 6, there will be one American dancer among the esteemed Mariinsky company: Keenan Kampa.
In 2012, Kampa, a member of the Boston Ballet, became the first American dancer to join the renowned Markiinsky Ballet of St. Petersburg, Russia. Originally from Virginia, Kampa studied with the Boston Ballet, American Ballet Theatre and took master classes at the Kennedy Center. She also studied in St. Petersburg, becoming the first American to receive a degree from the Vaganova, a storied school that produced George Balanchine, Vaslav Nijinsky, Rudolf Nureyev and Anna Pavlova, among other prominent dancers.
Mariinsky Live 3D Swan Lake presents the company’s definitive ballet in high-definition 3D, utilizing the same Academy Award-winning technology from Cameron-Pace Group as was used for Avatar, Hugo and Life of Pi. It will be the first live 3D broadcast and cinema release of its kind. The production is led by Mariinsky artistic director Valery Gergiev, with the role of ‘Odette’ being danced by prima ballerina Ekaterina Kondaurova.
